AK's are more readily available for two reasons. Actually both the 7.62X39 and the 5.56 rounds are virtually shitty after 100 yards. The 7.62X39 round has the literal knock down power you need but is quite a bit slower than the 5.56 which after 100 yards lacks knock down power. Remember that the 5.56 round is really only a .22LR hopped up on steroids. Inside it's optimal kill zone the 5.56 is great because it tumbles upon entry into a soft target where as the 7.62X39 keeps right on truckin.

The Russian's saw this in the 1960's and 1970's and introduced the 5.45X39 "Poison Bullet" fired from the AK-74 & Krinkov series rifles. We the US only now are moving to a heavier cartridge to compensate longer distance knock down power and accuracy issues with the 6.8mm SPC.
