I already paid for my fordchip and 80mm maf....$415....been 5 days and no update...nothing. Thats a lot of money for no contact info.
Now I can go to Powertrain Dynamics and get a custom burned Autologic chip for about $300...plus dyno time at about $125/hr....so if i dyno tune for 1 hr....i get a custom burned chip AND DYNO TUNE.
Should i wait for the MAIL ORDER chip from fordchip....or cancel and go locally? I am just pondering all this....

Locally for sure. Mail order chips are based on assumptions, not actual output data from your car.

Ford chip, they've done wonders for a lot of people's cars. Then if they make a local appearance, you can have them fine tune it.

I know that ford chip does a complete ecu flash at times and that allows them to change more parameters that can't normally be written in by a regular chip.

Sure. First let me explain what the main thing a chip does....
At wide open throttle it optimizes the air fuel ratio and timing advance.
That's pretty much it in a nut shell. Its far form a mysterious black magic box. Other minor stuff a chip can do is turn on the electric fan sooner, bypass smog sensors, ect... but again these are secondary items.
A dyno tune will measure your air fuel ratio curve on the dyno. The tuner will then correct/optimize this curve and then see how much timing advance your motor will take before detonating so a safe, yet optimized tune can be made. This often envolves several guess'n check dyno pulls to get right.
Mail order chips only only guesstimates. The guy on the other end of the phone guesses what your air fuel ratio should be, then guesses at what level it will make the most power, then guesses how much timing advance your motor will take before detonating. Basicly you're calling a 1-900-FORTUNE TELLER.
I hope this makes sense. Let me know if anypart was unclear and I'll try to explain it better.

yeah i completely understand what you are saying. In a nutshell: doing a tune in person is more accurate and safer than a mail order GUESS....correct?
I am going to call POWERTAIN and see what he does tell me

Yes, that's pretty much what I'm saying. Go to all the tuning shops you want, and talk to all the knowledgable tuners around. They'll all repeat what I said more or less.

well fordchip is due to come to northern Cali (i am in souther...so like 6hr drive) to tune....and i would then be able to tune it with the Fordchip....they should be down within the next month (after i get the mail order chip)....how does that sound?

A little misunderstanding of basic principles used by ECU and aftermarket chips. ECU has info written into so called memory banks. Modern 99+ has 4 of them, 3 with program code and 1 with program data, pre 99 had 2. Some chips such as Autologic, Superchip can replace only one bank (data bank) with external memory, Diablochip (Fordchip uses Diablo blanks) on the other hand is capable of replacing memory for all 4 banks, the same capability ECU reflash has. So in essence there is no difference between two. And as a side note, Fordchip can not only alter A/F ratio but they also do a wonder to auto tranny customizing shift points and lockup behavior, things that local tuners are not very good at.
