The detailed parts are the ones that take time...
YES graduate the grits on up to 2000+ WET...
THEN
A lot of people don't think about this. Do the same thing with rubbing/polishing compounds course to fine...
this sounds like it will take more time, but with the right machine/tools (dremel, buffer, DA, whatever) it'll go quick and eliminate the fine scratches.
THEN
if you dont wanna do it all over again.
Eastwood makes a good product for clear coating bare metal that I've had great success with. I've tried others thru the years and they do eventually yellow, but the eastwood's seems to hold up well.

Remember: let the compounds do the work and you'll be happy with the results, no reason for all that sanding.

FWIW: Like you I start with 100 or 120 grit and then 180 grit, move to 220 grit and then 360 grit. From there I use Emery compound on a ventilated flap buffing wheel followed by Tripoli compound on a spiral sewn buffing wheel, and then White Rouge Compound.
This man knows! I won't sand beyond 600 grit b/c I hate sanding. I let the tools & compounds do the work.
