I just recently put in a new waterpump and noticed that the temp started shooting close to the top. I parked the car and noticed the coolant dripping under the car. After checking all around the engine I decided to open the radiator cap valve and thats when it all spewed out of the overflow. What could be the cause of this? Do I need to burp the system??

Sounds like air bubbles, a bad or improperly installed thermostat or a non working radiator cap

You can install the thermostat correct, or backwards it will fit either way

So having the backwards thermostat will cause the pressure build up and spewing of coolant out of overflow? I can shut the car off, release the valve on the radiator cap and it fills the overflow and spills out on the ground

ALSO- I noticed I have a small crack on the filler neck of the overflow. Nothing major, small drips here and there. Would this make it impossible for the engine to suck back up the coolant thats flowing into the overflow?

Did it do this befort you changed the water pump? If nor maybe you have the wrong one. Is your car a 302 with a serpenteen belt?? You may have the wrong pump as those turn reverse. Check the part number and check the stat ib a bot of antifreeze with a thermomiter. See if it opens and at what temp. Remember the spring faces the engine. Good luck!!

I never noticed it spitting into the overflow before the pump change. It was coming out of the hole in the bottom of the pump and also from the timing cover. I'm doubting I got the wrong pump. I have the pulley spinning ccw which is what the stock one requires

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The pump might need a reverse direction IMPELLER. If you had no issues before other than a leak the pump is clearly wrong. Once again do you have a serpenteen belt which requires a reverse impeller???????????????????

You might have the wrong water pump, you need a reverse rotation water pump, but I have seen people spin a reverse rotation water pump the wrong way and not have a problem but I have heard of people having installed a standard rotation water pump and having a problem, but if the temp is high and you remove the cap, it will overflow into the reservoir, you will also get a lot of pressure in the system if there is still an air pocket.

Take a little tip from me for what it is worth. Been in the business 48 years. Always match up the old part with the new one. You just might be surprised of how many parts are WRONG!!!

Really appreciate all the feedback. I haven't had a chance to check which pump I got. I have a warranty on it, so if it is the wrong one they'll swap it out for me. I burped the system for like 20 minutes so I'm leaning more toward the wrong pump rather than an air pocket. Sucks to have torn it down just to tear it apart again. I noticed today when I started it in my driveway for a while that after turning it off the bottom hose was squeezed in with no water in it. I then released the valve on the radiator cap and it opened back up. I really hope its not a head gasket! I got brand new trickflow's so if it is, might as well do the swap. Thanks again for the feedback, any more information is appreciated.

UPDATE: The people at autozone say it was the correct ccw pump. Ill cross reference the numbers and make sure. Most of the people who work there don't even know which shoe goes on which foot.

All they go by is what the computer tells them. They have no experience. They tried telling me that my '92 didn't have a 302 in it. Listen to Tom and Racsirx they know what they are talkibg about. They have something Autozone does not have, experience.

Good luck man.

So the water pump checked out to be right. I did however find out the thermostat my friend grabbed me during the instal was wrong. It was a 195 and apparently it was bad OUT OF THE BOX! I put a 180 in, filled with water and no temp issues. Ill burp the radiator and add coolant and give an update. God bless if its just the damn thermostat!!

So after taking it around the city the temp shot to above 3/4ths and went back down to 1/2. I don't think the thermostat fixed the problem!

Ok lets start from the beginning. Question why did you change the pump in the first place???? Leaking or overheating this is important. And i asked you if you had the issue before the pump change and you added you either changed the stat or the one you had in the engine conked out??? So start over and explain exactly why and what was the symptoms!!

I was leaking from my timing cover, also had a bad main seal. No overheating issues other than when it all leaked out from the timing cover. Pump wasn't leaking but I changed it while I was in there just for piece of mind. I had a 180, changed to 195 and just changed that back to a new 180.

Ok so after changing the pump your trouble began. Do you have the old pump??? If so you have to compare them because it might be the incorrect one. Even if the parts store confirmed the correct part number it may be boxed incorrectly. But here is something to try. Once the stat opens and the coolant flows in the radiator does it come in to the upper hose and flow to the upper radiator discharge port. Another words is the coolant flowing twords the upper hose. If the coolant flow is reversed you have to check the PUMP. It makes no sense going further untill you establish coolant flow in the correct direction!! This was not an issue with the old pump so logic tells me you have a pump with the incorrect impeller. That is all i can think of. Also make sure your stat is installed correctly and test it in a pot of water with a thermometer in the water. This will tell you if the stat is good and see @ what temp it opens @
