Topic: Coolant leak from what looks like water pump?

Car running a bit hotter then usual car is drippin a bit of coolant it never did this before start aftr I left it at earl schwab wtf.. Its not overheating can it be a bad gasket maybe? Or a bad hose? Please input thank u cafords.

well, where around the pump is it leaking? around the gasket? at the hose? at the shaft?
if its gasket, replace it
at the hose, tighten it down
at the shaft, get a new pump
lol just go look under the hood and check it out.

might be timing chain cover gasket.. check the oil and see if theres any coolant in it

could be coming from behind ur timing chain cover (thats wat happend with mine) u gotta try and pin point the source while its drippin/running or if u have a pressure tester that can be a big help to hear/see where the leak is coming from if its drippping around ur crank pulley its either your water pump, the waterpump gasket, a bad timing cover or, tming cover gasket. check bottom of thermostat housing. theres really not much else it could be
OH and fyi runnig water in ur coolant system too long causes corrosion and that causes leaks faster than u think! ive learned the harder way with that hehe

yea I think it water pump gasket or timing cover gasket n yea Ive only run coolant lil bit of water. Pain in the as to replace all fron accesories must come off god I wonder if I can just leave it alone for a while since it doesnt over heat.

There's a hole on the underside of the water pump snout. Water leaks out of it when the bearing is failing. Only fix is to replace the pump.

^+2 it happens you will see a steady drip coming out of there if its bad but then all that trouble to replace the gasket might want to upgrade

Give it a go yourself.
Remove the fan shroud, radiator, fan, belt water pump pulley, and maybe move a couple accessory brackets to make room.
Hit the bolts off and make sure u remember where they go in reference to length. Any that plug coolant should be recoated with liquid teflon when reinstalled.
When u pull the pump off, peel the old gasket off with a razor blade or gasket scraper. One trick I use it to spray the area with brake clean to be sure all of the gasket came. Brake clean makes the hard to see spots that you missed appear. Once its clean get your knew pump and gasket ready.
Put some copper coat on the block where the gasket will sit and on the pimp where the gasket will sit (DONT APPLY IT DIRECTLY TO THE GASKET). after uve applied it to the pump, lay the gasket on the pump and let the copper coat set. This keeps the gasket from sliding away from u during install, and is extra reassurance that it will seal. Lay the pump against the block in place while hand threading a couple bolts then put all the bolts and get them daily snug. I prefer to torque them down to spec.
I also recommend doing the thermostat while ur at it. It's cheap and easy especially with everything out of the way. Coppercoat the thermostat housing with the new gasket too. I even got a replacement for like 10 bucks that had a bleeder screw for air pockets, which makes life easy.
Put everything together, fill the system slowly letting the system burp the air out as you fill it. Fire it up, turn ur heater on full blast (just incase there is an air pocket in the heater core) and wait for both radiator hoses to get hot. When they are both hot the thermostat is open and your done. Oh yeah, if u have an electric fan make sure it comes on without the A/C being on and at the proper temp.
*gasp I can't believe I wrote all this on my Android phone. The whole job is a lot faster than my instructions make it seem. The whole thing should take about an hour and a half including the thermostat.
As far as install price. Consider about 1.5 hours labor and probably 60-80bucks for an oem pump.

I just replaced my timing chain cover because mine was doing the same thing. Be cautious when removing the bolts. One of mine broke because it was corroded inside the bolt hole on the top left side. Fortunately, it broke off with about 1/4" outside the block and I was able to grab it and unscrew it. Had to drill/dremel out the bolt hole corrosion on the timing cover. Got new bolts at the wrecking yard but I think they sell them in sets.
You'll need a harmonic balancer puller AND harmonic balancer installer (2 separate tools). While I was in there and had everything off, I put on a new timing chain, harmonic balancer and water pump.
The job isn't too difficult....even I did it!! ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif) ....and that's the best part. I did it! Gets me to know my car much better.

Hopefully it's just the water pump. I just finished doing water pump and timing cover gasket on my 5.0 explorer. I would have been happy with doing just the water pump. Good luck.

Yea I was checking it and yea it the waterpump gasket leaking I saw a youtube video n It looks alot harder to uninstall then to actually put together and yea I saw him to all gaskets lil corner ones for oil pan n what no bur it should only be water pump gasket ill replace that and water pump and the thermostat n its gasket aswell and the coolant and cuz I need and might be recomended oil aswell anything else am missing?
One fast hatch I will be hitting u up bro thanks for your offer you might need to bring some of your tools bro as my collection isnt so extensive lol what days are you free bro?

Glad to hear it's just the water pump. MUCH easier than all the other stuff.
Sounds like you've got most of the stuff you need. You might want to replace those little hoses connecting to the water pump while you're there, if they need it. One of them is a real pain to get off. You can get them at your local parts store.
