Yeah, something about the tooth count and cut on 3;90's makes em noisy.I faced the same dilema and went with 4;10's.They howl a little too though,no biggie. [ May 04, 2011, 04:31 PM: Message edited by: 50DADDY ]

Not that it relates, but my Motive 3.90s definitely howled...
I'm skeptical that it is due to brand or tooth count however, but who knows.

do your 430's make noise?
my old 430's were loud as fuck, but I think they were just installed badly.
I have a ford racing 430 gear set and swap kit waiting to go into my irs but I can't bring myself to mess with it when the rearend works perfect and doesn't make any noise...but I miss the 'torque'!

Ive had motive 3.73s and Motive 4.10s. Both by Jaws and both had Minor howl from 55-65mph in my cammed ws6, but wasnt louder than my valvetrain noise.
I have heard 3.90s were loud, but i didnt buy a Mercedes...

It was pretty bad at part throttle between. I actually didn't realize how bad it was until I sold the car and got another Mustang that was a lot quieter.

My FMS 4.30s are pretty quiet in comparison with my old Motive 3.90s.
I had a different problem other than noise though. For some reason the machining tolerances on the splines of the 4.30 pinion gear were really loose and it was not a snug fit on the pinion flange resulting in a pretty bad leak through the splines. I had to zip off the pinion nut, hit it was some RTV, and it's been dry for over a year of daily driving now. No adverse driving effects either... go figure.

by 'pretty quiet' that means you can hear them on the freeway doesn't it

Barely... It's not something I'd even think twice about. On my previous car you couldn't miss it.

Had jaws gear install 4.30s in my mustang 8.8.. Howled like a mofo.. Eventually started leaking from both axle seals..
Had rear end specialties install 4.56s in my ranger 8.8.. Makes absolutely no noise at all..
Last place I would go again for gear installs is Jaws Gear..

when possible, go with ford gears. it's been well documented that ford gears are less prone to rear-end whining. their gears are not necessary made by ford, but their manufacturing tolerance seems to be higher than other brands.
quality parts and a seasoned installer is the key to no gear whine.

Me and my buddies have always had a good experience with Jaws. The guys there have taken care of a few of my cars.
The 3.90 gears are an odd cut and the way/angle they mesh cause them to be noisier than most other gear sets. Its the reason why very few companies offer them since customers want quiet rear ends.

what fluid did you put in with each gear set?? jaws blamed synthetic fluid for the extra noise with my 430s.

good to hear!
the FMS 3.73's in my `89 are quiet as stock, my old SRA in the `97 had motive 4.30's I believe and it was very loud on the freeway.
Who installed the gears in your 01?
now that I know it's possible to have quiet gears it makes me more ready to throw the FMS 4.30 kit into my IRS.
