Engine: 306 with Edlebrock HCI. At first I thought it was a header leak, but all my bolts look good, and the tick doesn't sound like an exhaust leak. I loosened everything up, checked the gasket, put it back together, still there. So, we listened for it, and it sounds like it's definitely coming from the driver's side. I pulled off the valve cover to see if it's a loose rocker, but everything is tight. Put it all back together, and listened some more.
The tick is definitely consistent with crankshaft speed. It sounds like it's coming from near the oil pan or tranny area. I don't think a clutch would make that type of sound? What else could it be? I hope it's not something to do with the bottom end.. [ June 28, 2012, 09:53 PM: Message edited by: DLo ]

Alright, thanks. Guess I'll do that. I'll be bringing the oil filter to the machine shop tomorrow to see if they find anything.
Anybody else have opinions?

when i had a similar ticking sound, it turned out to be a tiny hairline crack in the header where the welds are...

Engine ran great for a couple thousand miles before that started happening, so I don't think it is the shops fault.

Let me set this record straight. It appears some people have put it together and they have guessed the shop that I went through. First off, this is my fault that I didn't know who did what. They didn't assemble the bottom end as I had thought.
Dan was the one that helped me with my engine. I have NOT contacted Dan yet because I know he's going through a lot right now, and I don't want to bother the man. This is why I didn't list names or businesses in my original post - this is not a thread to give anybody a bad name or ruin their reputation. Both parties are fantastic people, and I will continue to refer people to them. The shop has been in contact with me, very friendly people, and helpful. My apologies to them if some people got the wrong idea.
91blackonblack - before you go jumping to conclusions, back off. I'm not the most mechanically inclined person so I'm struggling to try and explain the problem. For all I know, maybe it is an exhaust leak and I don't know what the hell I'm doing. You haven't seen or heard the engine in person, so how can you automatically start accusing someone of being at fault? All I'm trying to do is get some pointers of what to look for.
