well its probably because the rpms are pretty high. you can try calculating it here:
http://www.csgnetwork.com/multirpmcalc.html

given the gears if its a 5 speed its probably over 3 grand in 5th, if its an automatic... well try calculating it [Eek!]

What he probably heard was the shop telling him that during breakin he should not go over 55 for a long time without stopping and letting the rearend cool down.

Otherwise that is complete BS and I can't believe that anyone actually believed that! If that was the case, do you really think anyone would use those gears!

your wrong. [patriot] there is a break in. richmond says there is a 400-500 mile break in. they want you to drive it like 50 miles then let it rest. do this a couple of times then drive it nice for another 300-400 miles. also they say baking the gears at 400 degree's will help the break in. but what does richmond gears know. All I know is when i had 373's put in, in my 98, the shop who put them in said if the shop puts them in right there shouldnt be any worry about a "break in" period. Left the shop hittin 2nd gear breakin loose. But what do i know, no break in warning coming with the install kit with the FMS gear set, maybe cuz richmond gears whine even after a so called break in period....g'night [Roll Eyes] [Roll Eyes]

ITS CALLED RUNNING NEW PARTS THROUGH HEAT CYCLES AS EVERYTHING SETTLES. WHEN NEW PARTS ARE INSTALLED THEY HAVNT SETTLED YET DO TO HEAT CYCLES ONCE THEYVE BEEN THROUGH A FEW CYCLES THING START TO SETTLE DOWN WHICH MEANS PARTS DO MOVE AROUND A CUNT HAIR SO IF YOU ABUSE THEM FROM THE GET GO YOU TAKE A RISK OF DAMAGING THEM OR PREMATURE FAILURE. DO YOUR HOMEWORK NEXT TIME AND DONT OFF THE FIRST THING SOMEONE TELLS YOU. THERE IS A BREAK IN PERIOD JUST LIKE WITH MOTORS AND TRANNYS. GOODNIGHT!

I have 430s and I drive 80mph at 3100rpm all the time.. Maybe he said 55mph for the break in period.. My installer told me to drive around that speed during break in

because your buddy was born a few crayons short of a full box.

you need to change the speedometer gear, or buy a speedcal to adjust the speedometer and odometer after a gear or tire size change from stock.

you really can't rely on a shop to tell you everything that you can do to a mustang.

This post is still going?? [Confused]

Speaking from experience (I have just a lil bit installing gears), a extended break in period (100+ miles) is rediculous. If they are done correctly, there will not be a problem. 7-10 miles of freeway speeds (65+) will heat them up to face the gear...let the car cool for 10-15 minutes...and that's it. Remember though, everyone's opinion is different...
Brand new car rears don't have a extended break in period, why would your BRAND NEW gears have one? It's not a engine where you are concerned about piston rings seating correctly or worrying about sufficient oil pressure. I get 5-10 PMs a month asking me about this. [Wink]
