Topic: bad idea to paint aluminum heads?

The heads are used, but I am going to clean them up. Will they end up flaking or peeling and end up looking like sh**? ![[burnout]](graemlins/burnout.gif)

mostly depends on the prep and type of paint. If you scff it a little with sandpaper it will stick.

They will chip eventually. Get them powdercoated.

I was gonna clean em' up as best I could, use rattle can engine paint, and I doubt I will be gettin' these powder coated. So, sounds like I'll be leaving them alone for the most part, for now at least. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

when painting the exterior of your car... you would use an acid etching primer. (that adheres to the metal)
I don't much about engines but you needa high temp. paint & something to grab the aluminum. like an etching primer. maybe you can wash the aluminum with an aluminum prep-solvent? like dupont 244s. (metal prep)

another issue is heat retention. besides light weight aluminum heads have the advantage of running a lot cooler than iron. painting them could cause them to run hotter than otherwise would.

just take them to a machine shop and have them hot tanked and cleaned
