How do you know when the timing is off. My cars exhaust seems to sound differently recently. When I am driving I get up to about five thousand in second, and when i let off the gas the xhaust makes real loud poppping noises, like its backfiring a bunch. Before it use to sound sweet as i let off the gas, real loud but smooth as it went down. Any ideas guys about this problem.Only has a bassani x-haust. Thanks for any insight.

Check for exhaust leaks, but it sound as if your timming is too advanced...
I take it you have a 97 Cobra/4.6 Modular motor..Do you have a timming adjuster?....If you do not have a timing adjuster and the only modification you have done is the X pipe then I would definately check for exhaust leaks...
Sometimes a diverter valve in your smog pump lines will leak and let air get into your exhaust and cause the popping sound also...

if its an off road x-pipe then the popping is normal when you let off at high rpms. my cobra does the samething with the dr. gas x-pipe.

Thanks for the replies. No it doesnt have an x-pipe, just the bassani x-haust mufflers.
