feel sorry for anyone that commutes.
I live 1.5 miles from work and ride a bike 95% of the time, 10 minute bike ride.
I wouldn't want it any other way!

It's not worth it. My commute went from 3 to 45 miles because I wanted a bigger garage and backyard. I don't mind the commute because I work off hours, but the quality of life out here is way worse. No good food, no decent services, no regional parks, no trees, my neighbors are all hoarders (2 people living in 4000sq/ft houses full of junk that park their expensive cars outside). Tomorrow, I have to drive an hour back into the actual bay area to get an alignment. Location is everything.

In my opinion, commuting is ok to a certain extent. I commute 26 mi one way and I think it's fine. I have a decent size house, big yard, etc, etc. and paid a decent price (compared to rising house prices today). If I were to live where I work (on the peninsula), I'd be paying double the price for an equivalent house. No bueno!
My point is, I would not commute more than 30 mi one way, especially if you are going the same direction with traffic. But if your commute is 30 mi or less and you are able to afford a home that fits your needs, then go for it!

Rather pay more money for a house than burning the money on gas commuting or dying slowly in my car.

going on 11years commuting 80 mile round trip between daly city and the south bay. i would say this commute is very manageable given that the commute time is very predictable since 280 and 101 arent bad. my total commute time is typically around 1.5hrs a day. it also does help that work provides free EV car charging which helps reduce some of the commuting costs. if youre commuting more than 2hrs a day, u should really consider the pros and cons. job better pay well and have a great future outlook. many are attracted to the low priced homes on the outskirts of the bay area but fail to account for the time lost in commuting and the actual cost to commute. gas aint cheap and wear and tear adds up. also think about the investment youre making since these remote areas tend to have less appreciation than a desired area and end up getting hit hard when the market goes to the shitter. try saving a few bucks for a few year to get you into a house in a better location than buying w/ very little down in a shitty area. that said, its totally understandable if the priority is to just get into a house regardless of location, best ROI, etc.

I don't even consider it wasting gas. It's a waste of life.
