Just wondering what are the pros and cons. I have always had interest in this field just don't know where to start. Is there like a local union you an go talk too? How does it work? Any info or advice will be highly appreciated. Thanks fellas.

I'm a commercial electrician with local 332 Santa Clara. You need to go to the JATC and apply. You hav to take a simple test general School stuff. You need proof of one year highschool algebra and a highschool diploma or GED. Once you pass the test you have to interview and depending how well they like you determines where they put you on a waiting list. They have been taking new apprentices like crazy the last 1 1/2 years. I have worked non union and union. It's a good gig. I'm currently at the 49er stadium building the substation electrical rooms.

Here is the number to the Jatc 408-453-1022. Call them and ask when the next application day is. They do it quarterly I believe.

Whether you like to be indoors or outdoors check out Local 104. Being a union sheet metal worker pays great and I think if I'm not mistaken one of the best retirements. Same thing as poision said. Hit up the Local hall and be ready to work. Good luck in your choice.

had the opportunity to go from non-union to union but didnt take it with 302,595 or 180 because they wanted me to start over again after almost 4 years and I was only 2500 hrs out from j-man status. I also didnt like the fact that many electricians I knew in those unions were out of work. I recently got a permanent state gig working as an electrician at a water treatment plant so its just Mcc's,PlC's,LCP's and VFD from here on out for me and only a 14 min commute. a buddy did recommend the union thats doing the 9ers stadium which was recommended above. at the end of the day its all about your pay and benefits and working non-union P.W. and union to me was one in the same, I did very well. hope this helps.

I'm also looking too go back to a Union job now that more are opening up. If u want too stay indoors and keep it light go with ELECTRICIANS UNION. I worked as a laborer for a sheet roking co. i used to get my ass kicked day in day out but made some good $+benefits. I just quit my forklift operator/stocking job because of the amount of money i was making + no benefits=FAIL [patriot]

id say thats a damn success story right there. $102k annually can feed lots of kids and buy lots of stang parts
[Wink]
not sure if the union would be solely responsible for that however

I'd say Jorneyman make 80k-100k depending on how the economy is and how many hours you actually go to work. Lol

And most journeymen make 120k with OT. There are some general foremans making 200k with OT. Most guys who just work 40 hrs make 90k but most work the OT to keep their jobs

Which union is this for bro? The answer is Yes if its for the electrician union you need to bring a copy of your transcripts from HS showing you passed Algebra with a "C" or better. Other unions I have not seen or heard of pre-requist math profeincy but generally in all the union test I applied for math was on them. I have taken so many different ones, which one you going too tomorrow? [patriot]
