everybody on unemployment just gotta get off their lazy asses and go find i job stop depending on the government.
i been laid off before but never been on unemployment, jus got out there and found something else i cant go 1 week without knowing that i dont got a check coming its scary now its worse cause i have 2 lil boys. i was raised not to depend on anybody so taking a hand down from the government jus dont feel right. i rather let people who really need it like the unfortunate kids.

i dont want to be the "dick" in the thread, but if you have no kids, no house payment, or car payment and you're complaining about running out the free money to pay your "luxuries" than i suggest a rough but NECCESSARY change OF LIFESTYLE . this means no cell phone, budgeting food, moving back into your parents house, friends house, etc. saving on gas. I know its hard to go from making 5k a month to 1.5k a month, but hey, you gotta roll with the punches homie. i;m just saying

That is kind ofunfair to lump everyone together. Man its hard out there for jobs right now. You got people with masters degrees trying to get jobs at Costco. I do not think unemployment is a system that is being exploited at this point. People are really needing it to get by.

Makes perfect sense, I'm already living at my dad's house for little rent, I sold the Mustang for a gas/ insurance friendly Prelude, I am stuck in a contract with AT&T and I just started paying out of pocket for health insurance. Actually, the most expensive thing in my life is the girlfriend and even she is understanding. As for toys, I really don't have any other than my xbox and I don't spend too much time on that. I'm not complaining, as I said a couple of times, I feel very fortunate to be in the position I am in. I was just caught very off guard yesterday when I called EDD and they said you have no benefits remaining as of last week... not even this week. It's knowing you have a lifeline one minute and the next it is gone... However, as of this morning, I have straightened it out and I'll have schooling finished up this fall and we will see what 2011 brings; in the mean time I will continue to look for jobs in my profession. My post was more to share my story with others, knowing there are 200,000 other Americans whose benefits are running out every week. Like N8 said, it't not easy out there looking for a job and it's a struggle, but I feel like I have taken the right steps to try and ride this storm out!

im on my regular ui claim and i have 2 months left keeping close tabs on congress but i think its bs that they cut off everyones unemployment especially the ones who haven't had any extensions yet, now the 99weekers that's understandable.I haven't been sitting on my ass collecting checks i prefer to work and have filled out countless applications and gone for interviews with no luck.Luckily i live at home so i know if nothing passes i have 2 months to stack up on checks because who knows how long it could take to find a job.

Contra Costa Times editorial: Senate must find a way to extend jobless checks
BAY AREA NEWS GROUP
Posted: 06/30/2010 12:00:00 AM PDT

FEDERAL LEGISLATION to extend unemployment benefits, provide aid to help pay for state workers, and enact some tax increases and tax breaks failed to get the 60 votes needed in the Senate to prevent a Republican filibuster.

That is an unfortunate outcome for the 200,000 Americans each week who lose their much-needed benefits. Without the extension, employment checks stop after 26 weeks, far short of the 99-week limit that had been in place.

Even though Democrats reduced the cost of the aid package, Republicans opposed it because it would add new taxes and boost the federal deficit by $30 billion.

While there is a major division in the Senate about more federal spending on state government jobs, there is considerable support for extending jobless benefits beyond 26 weeks as long as unemployment remains so high.

What needs to be done is to disentangle the unemployment benefits from the rest of the legislation. We agree with Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, who said, "Separating the unemployment insurance provisions of the extenders bill and passing it as emergency legislation acknowledges the urgency of helping those who continue to look for work."

Her call for quick action focused on jobless benefits makes sense not only because of the needs of people who cannot find work, but also for the overall economy.

Snowe explained that unemployment checks inject money directly into the economy,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
invariably assisting in economic recovery.

There are more than 1.2 million people out of work for longer than 26 weeks who will remain ineligible for continued weekly unemployment checks until an extension is approved.

Originally, benefits up to 99 weeks were offered as part of the economic stimulus bill. There is still enough unspent stimulus money to fund an unemployment benefit extension without adding to the federal deficit.

If the issue were separated, it appears there would be sufficient Republican support for extending unemployment benefits to overcome a filibuster.

Instead, Democrats are blaming Republicans for being insensitive to the needs of people who can't find jobs, and Republicans are berating Democrats for overspending and using jobless benefits as a ploy to win approval of their pet projects.

That kind of exchange is unproductive. Certainly, everyone in the Senate understands that until the economy begins to recover, there are likely to be large numbers of Americans who are out of work for more than 26 weeks.

Without unemployment benefits, they face financial hardship that can lead to more home foreclosures, less consumer spending and a delay in the nation's economic recovery.

Extending jobless benefits beyond 26 weeks has been common practice during times of high unemployment. It is time to remove the benefit extension from the failed aid measure and pass it quickly as a separate bill.

$12 an hour, thats bullshit. I just did the math and it comes out to 1900 a month, so after taxes its like 1400 or something like that, maybe 1200. Shit! I'd rather sit on my ass and collect them checks. I havent worked hourly for like 9 years and didnt realize how low that pay is. Being in law enforcement, I think you're gonna have a real hard time getting anything so I'd probably start looking at other things. Maybe do construction under the table or something. Sell prepaid legal, sell some Kirby vacuums, do something. [Frown]

Have you thought about joining the military?

Do you think law enforcemnet positions will open up in the next 4-5 years? If not, you might want to pick a different career...

+1 and I wouldn't feel bad about taking a unemployment check. We have all paid into unemployment in our taxes for many years.

I also think that if people didnt buy houses to cashout so they could roll around in Escalades and spend like money was going out of style the housing market wouldn't have crashed and the economy wouldn't be like this. I think its pretty safe to say the housing market was supporting the economy since 2005 until the crash. All the additional spending people did gave money to companies to expand, hire and give employees higher wages.

Of course I have thought about the military and the military is a viable option down the road, even as a reserve. However, that is a four- five year commitment and at this point I am still in a wait and see period. As I said, I am eligible to reapply for EDD benefits, another 26 weeks. I am going to finish another semester of school and then see where I am at come January 2011.

I have an inside track to work at the distribution center where my dad works as a truck driver. It would pay a fair and livable amount of money with benefits, but he will not pull strings for me until I finish school after this next semester.
That being said, come September or October, I think there is a good chance I'll be back at my department as an on-call. The department is facing another 75 layoffs as soon as August, on top of 132 full-time and 300 on-call layoffs last year; however, the practice has been to layoff from full-time and make those people into on-calls. Come October, the budget/ layoffs should be clear and the department will need extra help and with any luck I'll be in again. So, I am in a wait and see period. I am not holding my breath, but that would be a best case scenario for me.

If that doesn't work out, I will go to work as a warehouseman come January and keep of my reserve hours with my department. I am staying optimistic, I have a lot to be grateful and I am much more fortunate than some of the others in my position.

From everything I hear, leo positions will start to open up 3-5 years from now. Eventually, attrition will take place and there will be a mass hiring again...or so goes the theory. Local governments will be the last to come out the recessions at it takes time to recover money from property taxes and other sources of income. I'll just continue to keep my nose clean, stay out of trouble and build on the experience I have through reserve work. At some point, it will happen again for me!

On a side note, I know I am not the only one feeling this... I was just watching the news, 23 Stockton Police Officers served their last day today and another 30 something could be laid off come August without concessions... Oakland laid off 80 officers and other departments down south are closing up shop entirely and being dissolved. Bottom line, California is screwed.

Valid point... However, when you go from making $4,500-5,000 a month ($60,000 a year) unemployment is only a fraction of that (max is $1,850 a month). So, it really doesn't cover all that much if you have bills like a mortgage, cars, boats or other toys. Thankfully, I didn't purchase any of the above and saved a lot of money I earned. However, being unemployed for the past 8 months I have burned through a lot of that. In reality, there is no way I could go back to Home Depot and survive financially. Aaron we both know how that was $12 an hour was good money for an associate there and we were still part time. That would never cover my monthly expenses. I think when I worked there I was making 10k-12k a year on average. Unemployment provides me that in six months. So, point in fact, it actually makes more economic sense to stay on unemployment and look for a job/ career in my field that provide me with future and I have been. I have sent out countless applications, gone to interviews, filled out PH's the whole 9 yards, but for one reason or another it falls through. Competition is steep 1,000 people to 1 spot... it's getting as bad as applying to be a firefighter. I have been continuing to pad my resume with more education and reserve/ volunteer work with my old department, but I am still coming up short and I am not alone.
No doubt Ricky. I just hear a ton of people at my job who talk about getting laid off etc and will only go for the same type caliber of job. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to. Especially if you have kids and need to put food on the table.

If your not working right now something is very wrong. Even a few retired annuitants are working again because there are not enough on-calls to backfill positions.

Call the DSA.

I know believe me, I wish I could be back on. I saw there was a lot of movement to the courthouse. What's more is I see all the overtime being used and it drives me crazy, but I am powerless at this point. I talked to the Capt. and Admin Sgt. at the Branch, both said they would have me back on, but they are waiting for the on-call eligibility list. I think after the dust is settles with the new round of layoffs I'll be back on. I saw you're sitting around 48 on the list... Crazy to think after four-five years of dedicated service mean nothing [Frown] . I would say I am surprised to hear there are retired annuitants working, but I'm not.. Right now all I can do is volunteer as a reserve deputy and keep my name front and center...

I do not mean to sound like a dick, but 1 year of being unemployed? I have had a job since I was 9..Rough times or not. And you are frustrated with the government for not paying for you to be unemployed for another year? Holy shit man..Get a job. I dont care what it is...Sometimes you have to make a lifestyle change until things turn around. I cant believe people are honestly whining about not receiving free money for another year. This is out of control. What kills me is that the ones that do work are paying for these extensions in taxes if they do go through. How is that fair to us? The tax payers..Do we get our money back once you get a job? Unemployment has its purposes. But one would think that after 52 frickin weeks you would find something if you were looking hard enough...
