One thing to remember, HP = (TQ/5252)*RPM
In other words, if your motor peaks before ~5900-6000rpm you will make more TQ than HP. If the motor peaks above 6000rpm you will make more HP than TQ.

A Cobra intake manifold will make it extremely difficult to pull the RPM needed to make 320/320. & in order to make 320HP with a Cobra intake on a 302 you'd need roughly 360RWTQ. Haven't seen that done yet on a stock bottom end. The most I've seen is 340RWTQ....which will net you just over 300RWHP with the restrictive Cobra intake.
Swapping to an RPM intake & larger camshaft will raise the RPM & you'd be exchanging low-end TQ for high RPM HP.

Also note: There are no shorty headers that can 'swallow' the wide AFR exhaust port. Port-matching of the header flange will be neccessary.

Good article...the aftermarket is definitely better now...the most power I've had on a stock shortblock was 315/320-ish but that was with afr 165's, rpm intake, and lunati cam (similar specs to tfs1) but it ripped hard....too bad it didn't rip that hard when it got sprayed to death and died after like 100 nitrous passes....lol

A performer Intake is worth ~15-20hp over a Cobra with very little loss in TQ....if any. An RPM 1 intake is worth ~10-15HP over a performer with a loss of about the same in low end TQ.

I'd use an RPM 1 intake (no longer available new) with Competition AFR165 heads, 7/16th stud mount.
Comp cams Pro-Magnum rockers (1.6 or 1.7 depending on cam)
Either leave the E & use 1.7 rockers, or swap out to an X with 1.6 rockers.
Quality 9-keyway adjustable timing chain
Ideally a custom smogable cam would make the most power, but that would require Stiffer valvesprings (NOT upgraded AFR stuff) & Titanium retainers.
1 3/4" Longtubes (with ported primary flanges to match the heads) & 2.5" off-road exhaust.

If you want to stick with a more mild camshaft, you can off-set the power difference with the following:
Electric water pump
Crankshaft scraper
Race Underdrive crankshaft pulley with an overdrive Alternator pulley.

Or, you can do all of the above & get the most out of the combo.

The most power I've seen out of shorty headers (with off-road exhaust) is 314RWHP....& that motor had a large non-smogable camshaft (.600 lift) & notched pistons. Still ran an 11.99 @114.5mph though...

The question really is, do you want more low-end or top-end?

all i really want is to run 12's at the track, and spank some ls1's on the street.....it dont really matter to me about the power as long as i can run the 12's and smoke some maros

do i really need all that of what u posted to achieve my above goals?

can it be done with my

-94 cobra(full weight)
-stock ported intake
-ported shorties(cuz i want smog legal)
-165 afr's(smog legal)
-stock rockers
-h pipe no cats
-one chmber flows
-3:73 gears

cant be buying and installin all kinds of shit cuz i dont really have all that much money cuz i cant work, so im trying to make the best of what i got man [patriot]

Depends on hook & driver.

All you really *need* to run 12's is slicks/skinnies & 104-105mph traps. I don't know what full weight is on your particular car, but for 3400lb raceweight I'd think 270RWHP would get you into the 12's at 106+.

With 314RWHP in a 3300lb car we were spanking bolt-on 03Cobra's & ran basement 12's all day long (best of 11.99).

The 93Cobra in the article I posted ran mid/low 12's at 110mph.

dont put your hopes up there.... alot of people have done HCI on there car and there hopes where 300 RWHP and got very dissapointed with 270-280..... just a lil thought of dont get bumbed out if it happens [patriot]

i was like that a long time ago... i remmeber i did a CAI, TB and EGR spacer lol i was thinking i was going to make atleast 250... i was 16 didnt know much.... i got the car dynoed and got 210 rwhp and i was pissed i wanted to sell my car and shit... just wanted to share [Big Grin]

im sure it wont happen.....i have 250 right now.......alone the heads will give me 50 more hp (at least) [Wink]

actually thats pretty good, a reg. 5.0 makes like 180- 190rwhp
mine stock makes like 215-225rhwp and gained like 20-30rwhp cam only ( very small cam at that)

That's what I'd do....if not an even bigger camshaft.
Shorty headers can be used but they will reduce power.

The 314/321 Rear Wheel combo was in my wife's 91GT when it had a stock bottom end. Raceweight at that time was around 3300lbs. It was a rockin' little combo.
Ran that time ONCE on a cold day (perfect conditions) with slicks & a 1.70 60ft.

when u ran slicks in ur wifes car, was there anything done to the rearend? like axles? gears? anything? i dont wanna break my shit ya know

Yes, she had 3.73's with stock axles/track lock. Every rear end is different....some stockers cut 1.5's & don't break, others break with DR's &1.8-1.9 60fts.
