Ok guys, been thinking it through and am pretty sure im going to build the boss block from ford. I know that you need bigger pistons as well as some other machine work but have any 96-04 owners done this? Looking to build it with pi heads, professional product typhoon intake or the bullit looking trickflow intake, but what i really want to know is if the car will be street legal, ie pass smog. Im not trying to make crazy numbers either. Somewhere between 300 and 350 rwhp. What can you guys tell me? Thanks for the help [ 2014-11-02, 07:31 PM: Message edited by: Frank.JD.Perez ]

If you're not going for crazy numbers, then why not just use a Teksid?

Dont want to get a blower simply because the car is a DD. My last gt had the pi and was fun but I want something that isnt common and fits me. I dont want crazy numbers because I dont care for them much, just looking for more power, I plan to autocross my car so I wont need crazy numbers. Now, has anyone done this and can give good feedback?

don't know if you'll find any one here; maybe corral. like stanced said why not a teksid block if your only shooting for 350rwhp. boss block is supposed to a lot heavyer than all the iron blocks
id find a teksid block bore .20 and forged Balanced internals, you said you wanted to be smog legal go custom cam ported pi's or are the trickflow heads carb legal with a pi intake or bullit intake

Did a bit of research last night on the teksid, 70 I like your input but isnt the teksid the 96 98 cobra block? Does it not matter what the block is to build the engine?

it is a 96-98 cobra block(strongest Alumin) no problem putting 2v heads on it. it will be lighter than building with a boss block and cheaper boss blocks are 1,300.00 or so starting you can find a good tekside for 200-400 depending how long someones been sitting on it. Teksid blocks were used in 96-99 cobras and in 01 it can either be a WAP or Teksid since ford was replacing the Teksid with WAP. Also careful as some 99 engines were replaced with WAP block motors. (Some other vehicles besides cobras had Teksid motors but had different cranks that were not 8 bolt or forged like the cobra).
The Teksid block can handle a ton of power and is aluminum. If you get the top end from a "fixed" 99 or a later year that didn't have the problem it will make 300rwhp stock with the right exhaust setup.
The 32v motors do not have the low end like a 5.0 but they sound real nice and once you get the RPM's up... well they scream and are fun!

You guys have been more than helpful. Alright looks like I will be going the teksid route. What else should I know to get the block up and running? And by asking that question I mean crankshaft, cams, heads, pistons, bore/stroke, and all that other fun stuff. Different transmission or stock t45?

NPI pistons(96-98gt"for a bump in compression) some ported pi or trickflow heads off the self cams trickflow or comp cam 270 cam are ones some have used and gotten away with at smog. i believe even most of these components have been on the classified section in the last few months. believe only mod to block is a water passage needs to be drilled on the left cylinder side

I would try to find a nice set of 03/04 Manley rods if you can, as well as a steel Cobra crank.

Researching a bunch on teksid builds. Which ratio should I go with for the combination ratio. Definitely wanna try to do the 10.5:1 but not sure. Theres a ton of walk through posts however im still looking for a CA street legal build. Still need to pass the stupid smog tests so anyone know someone who has built a smog legal 2v teksid? Wanna do 300/350 hp. The 8 bolt cobra crank, pi heads, probably pi cams, most likely 96 98 rods and pistons, pi intake for now but probably upgrade to a pp typhoon or the trickflow bullitt looking intake. Also read that the mark 8 intake is like the bullitt and would just need the trickflow TB [ 2014-11-09, 04:44 PM: Message edited by: Frank.JD.Perez ]

Any build you do can be legal, given the correct appearance. A smog tech isn't going to know the difference between a 2v, 4v, WAP, Teskid, Romeo, W block. It doesn't matter. If you want to build a combo that will work, go for a 10.5 or 11-1 combo with something similar to a stage 1 cam setup. Proper work to the cylinder heads will allow you to net the most you can from the combo. Port match everything.
If you're trying to use stock parts, a 96-04 Cobra crank, 03-04 Cobra rods. Go new on the pistons (like Probe or DSS) and find a good shop to build it for you. For what you're wanting to do, a WAP block (99-01 Cobra or 03-04 Mach) is more than enough. It will keep the weight off the nose, parts (bearings, gaskets, etc) are cheap, and the block is readily available.

I ran a teksid 2v with comp 262 cams, PP intake, MMR stage 3 ported heads, 11-1 compression and passed smog better than stock, but I had it dyno tuned and a "smog" 87 tune made though. I made 320ish ( I don't remember exactly) rwhp and similar tq numbers. I used the stock -3cc dish pistons and was very close to PTV contact. This was 5 years ago and I sold the car but I will try to answer any questions you have. [ 2014-12-09, 06:21 AM: Message edited by: foxbodyCJ ]

I also built similar setup as him stock cobra/teksid long block ported my own 2v heads ported typhoon manifold comp 268 bbk LTs bbk 78mm TB/plenum. I never tried smoging due too LTs and high compression but can say it had a lot of power and torque for having stock timing table (had basic tuning software then) I ended up going too lower compression to super charge it but with my full tuning software I have now I will build that motor again cuz if it felt that good with low timing (also really good on gas since its my commuting car) I would definitely like to see what it can do with more timing.
Just make sure you get it tuned and remember when using 2v heads on teksid block there is a hole you have to drill on front upper driver side for coolant
