I called rearend specialties last week and they wanted $265 for the labor and gear oil. I am still trying to decide if I want to tackle this project myself.

A "good" job? Actually, I think I do a great job Seriously though, I've done about 10 sets for people on the site, not to mention numerous sets of my own. (but I still got 93redcobra's to do..I haven't forgotten Sam!) Break in varies as to whether they are used or not. Brand new? Depends on the brands instruction, but as a general rule of thumb..about 50 miles of easy driving. Used? Beat the hell out of them when you leave my driveway. As long as they are setup correctly, they will last...new or used. If you're interested, lemme know.
Edit: supplies would be you'll need a install kit (or at least a new crush sleeve) and gear oil. [ August 12, 2003, 01:02 PM: Message edited by: JohnB ]

If you buy the COMPLETE install kit, it's about $95. What year is your 4.6? If it's a 96 or newer, and the seals are in good shape, all you really need is a new crush sleeve. Sleeve goes for about $10 or less, I haven't priced them out lately. Gear oil and friction modifier is about $25. As for when, when is the car available and you have the $$?

You don't need an install kit. A new crush sleeve can be picked up at any Napa parts store. The gear oil, etc can be bought there too. You need 3 qts of oil.
Only 3.55's? You must have 14" rims still. seriously though, if your wheel/tire combo warrants it, you can go as high as you want, as long as the combo is matched. Honestly, for a street car and a 5spd...I'd run 3.55's OR 3.73's..an auto? 4.10's are a MUST.

how are 3:73's on the freeway? so all you need is the ring and pinion gear, crush sleeve, and the oil and you could do it?

Really depends on what you are looking to get out of these gears. You race alot? Go w/ 3.73's...just want it to be a bit quicker? Go 3.55's. If it's a 5spd, you should have 3.27's already, so with 3.55's, you're not going to "feel" alot of difference.
Just depends on what you want. And yes, what you listed is all I need to do the job.
