My wife and I currently own a condo in San Jose. My wife works in Saratoga 3.5 days a week and I work in San Jose sun-Thursday . I WANT A DAMN HOUSE! We're going to take a look at mountain house today. My question is Do any of you guys commute? If so does your family know who you are? We have no kids just a dog

I commute 80 miles round trip everyday. But I'm pretty lucky going from Vacaville to sac. I don't hit much traffic so it pretty quick and easy

Thanks guys. I just want my own house with my own yard. I hate going to the dog park and hearing woman scream at their dogs. Privacy over commuting

A lot of guys I work with commute to where I work in Palo Alto. We all get to work between 6 and 6:30 so the morning commute for the commuters is not so bad. The afternoon commute is a nightmare for them. They can take 2.5-3 hours to get home. A lot of the time they just say fuck it and get a hotel. One of the guys in my group lives in Lodi, he rents a place in Mtn View and only goes home on Wednesdays and weekends. That is poor quality of life IMO.
Are you aware of the wind in Mountain House? I launch my boat at River's End a lot and that place is always very windy. I think it would get old quickly.

Id hate commuting. I have a buddy that works 1 1/2 hours away from his job. That turns an 8 hour day into an 11 hour day.
If you have no other options job wise than I would go for it. But, I would be searching for something else on the side.

I also commute 80 miles a day round trip and have been doing it for 10 years. Not a big deal as long as you dont sit in traffic. If there was traffic, I wouldnt do it. I also drive my V as a DD and now my commute is fun.

I live in Mountain House and commute to Sunnyvale. My advice... Don't fucking do it. The commute blows. I take the ACE train and it's a solid 2 hours one way from my front door to my desk. If I drive, it's anywhere from 1.5-2.5 hours depending on how shitty the traffic is. Average time if I leave at 5:30am is an hour and 40 minutes. If your wife has to go to Saratoga, fugghedaboutit, she's going to divorce you if you make her drive there.
It sucks so bad, we're moving back to Alameda County. Having a big house isn't that great when you're never home to enjoy it.
If you're deadset on moving out this way, my advice would be to rent out your condo and rent a place out here for a year. If you can survive it for a year and you're still ok with it, then buy. [ 2014-03-29, 08:48 PM: Message edited by: wilit ]

I commute 120 miles a day....Not liking it. My wife and step daughter have a basically 0 mile commute. I rent and feel the same as the original poster. I saw something on Craigslist yesterday....rent to own homes.

Well I did the math and there's not enough going in to savings. Too many cons vs pros it isn't happening. We'd be better off doubling down on a car note and buying in sj. Thanks for the input fellas. Those were some nice houses

If you get a chance, take the commute route/time you would be going to do and see what it is like. Friday nights going home are terrible.

Yeah, I think you're situation is a little different than his though. I remember you said that you did trucking? If so, you're actually making $ while driving. He wouldnt be.
At least you get a month off. I dont know what I would do with myself if I had a month off.

I commute 60-100 miles (depending on whether im running errands or not) a day, Monday thru thursday. My dd is a '07 gt stick shift and it does get tiring by the end of the day. I wish I had the luxury of not having to commute so damn much.
