Go 2 door and get an Integra GS-R. Good gas and decently quick.

When I was looking for a 4door commuter that was looking at accords, integras, civic's. But ended up with a 2002 VW Passat pretty cheap and loved it,comfortable and had a little pick up, 1.8l Turbo, my mileage reader would go past 30mpg sometimes on the freeway. Had it from 102k miles to 142k miles with no issues.

I would wait and save up some cash if possible, I would think it is going to be tough to get anything that is going to last to long for that price.
If you cant wait, and want something new with low payments go Lease a car. They have some 4 door cars leasing for $99 a month with like $3500 down.

Try and find a MkIV Jetta TDI. Cheap enough for your budget, great mileage and they last forever. 400k-500k miles out of the engine is pretty common.

nothing is going to last like a regal gs. it has a timing chain. iron block and motor. crank, rods and pistons are forged. trannys suck but they handle it... i can do a tranny swap out and in on a lift in 3 hrs

Find yourself an earlier (00-02) v8 Lincoln LS, I had one for about four years and miss it. Decent power, comfortable, somewhat luxurious, about 22-23 mpg highway, and a 8.8 Trac loc diff drops right into that 8.0 rear end.
