When I was looking for a 4door commuter that was looking at accords, integras, civic's. But ended up with a 2002 VW Passat pretty cheap and loved it,comfortable and had a little pick up, 1.8l Turbo, my mileage reader would go past 30mpg sometimes on the freeway. Had it from 102k miles to 142k miles with no issues.

Look for honda accords. I've got a 2000 v6, it's the best car I've owned.

I would wait and save up some cash if possible, I would think it is going to be tough to get anything that is going to last to long for that price.

If you cant wait, and want something new with low payments go Lease a car. They have some 4 door cars leasing for $99 a month with like $3500 down.

Buick regal GS. 3.8 supercharged I have a 2000 that is now over 210,000 miles. They can be had for that price range.

Try and find a MkIV Jetta TDI. Cheap enough for your budget, great mileage and they last forever. 400k-500k miles out of the engine is pretty common.

I had one before I got rear ended and that was the end of that lol
I had a lot of cars in the past so its hard to choose something different from what I had in the past.

Find yourself an earlier (00-02) v8 Lincoln LS, I had one for about four years and miss it. Decent power, comfortable, somewhat luxurious, about 22-23 mpg highway, and a 8.8 Trac loc diff drops right into that 8.0 rear end.

If you are looking to buy a house you are right. Don't get a new car. It will show up on your credit when you go to buy a house and they could deny you the loan.

Good Luck!!

Does it have to be a four door?

If not, find yourself the newest SC300 or SC400 you can find with the lowest mileage for $3500. I know they are the "ghetto hoodlum" car of choice but if you find a well maintained one they are a rock solid Toyota with that 2JZ or 1UZ engine.

If not, a 1st gen GS300 will also be 2JZ powered and reliable. I currently use a SC300 as a DD. I picked up with just over 100k miles and its been good. Don't expect stellar gas mileage out of them, though LOL.

If you're trying to stick with the budget of $3,500. I would try to get an integer GS-R. Or if you have to have a four door perhaps a gently used Civic or a 4 door Integra. Hondas engines are reliable and easy to work on!!
