first off which motor do you want? 94/95(cobra and GT) still have 5.0, 96-04 GT have 4.6 SOHC, 96-04 cobra have 4.6DOHC.

Save your money and buy a Corvette. For now, get yourself a nice little civic. And buying an older stang from the dealer/lot, is going to be a rip off. Don't waste your time.

I love the SN95 body but as previously stated they are slow as hell out of the box and unfortunately the overly modded ones are mostly owned but 19 year old's with no sense of respect for a vehicle lol
Also, buying a car like that from a car lot you really have to be careful or the transaction will require lube!

A car lot??? SN95s are 15 years old no reputable car lots going to have one there unless its Triple Crown Auto or some shit.
You can buy a SN95 cobra probably for no more than 5-6K at the most. A sloooow as gt 96-98 will probably run 2500 max, a slooow as 5.0 will run about the same.
SN95 is one of the least loved mustangs since the 72-78s.

If I were to get a sn95 I would most likely go for a cobra first. Great motors in those cars, they sound awesome, and have tons of potential. My second choice would be a 94/95 to stay with the push rod motor. Easy to mod and the 302 is proven work horse. My last choice would be a GT. If this were to be your choice STAY AWAY FROM THE 96. First year for the mod motor and they have nothing but problems with that SOHC motor and don't make that great of power. If its speed you want don't forget you can make anything fast, so if thats the body style you like stick with it! Cant go wrong in a ford. It really just depends on what you want to do with the car too. DD or weekend warrior, possibilities and combos are endless!!
As for what to check I agree with what has been said above Torque boxes should be the first thing to look at, along the all the basics. Check the fluids look for anything out of the ordinary, and just drive it see how the car feels. A clean sn95 can be had for fairly cheap from a private party so if you can I'de stay away from dealerships Good luck on your buy

sn95 are one of the best in my opinion specially coming out of a damn rattle can fox which was fun but sucks for daily driving.
also,to the OP, the one thing you always look for is craked torque boxes always tell you if its been dogged or swung many times.

I always liked the 98 cobra verts on that body style. Nice clean styling. Mystic would be cool too. Oh ya, also white Saleen verts are very nice too in that body style.
