So I was playing partypoker and decided to get something to grub. I come back an hour later and my computer was off. I was like what the fuck! I didn't turn it off. Then all of sudden I started to realize a smell (like burnt rubber or wires). Anyhow this is what happened.
This fucking sucks balls. I was not ready spend money on a computer, and I can't live without the internet. LOL. So I have to get a computer now, on top of that I was just getting ready to drop off my DUCATI for the 6k service. Now I have to pay for both together. FUCK. I have the money, it just sucks to be spending on something you weren't totally expecting. Especially $500-$1500 (depending if I want to go cheap this time). My SONY VAIO is about 4 years old and I spent about $2400 at the time of purchase.
What does it look like that burned? and how? This happened while I was eating and was totally unaware of it, until I got back and it already had happened.
Now I'm on my roommates computer. I hate just watching TV. I need to have TV and internet available at all times while Im home. LOL. [ May 03, 2006, 01:55 AM: Message edited by: Venomized93 ]

Ha, the laptop im using right now is burned TO SHIT on the back.. my dad caught the dining room table on fire right before he left for a few minutes and came back to a semi melted computer. So thanks to insurance he got a new one and now i have this one that still works perfect. Guess its all how you look at it.. Maybe its time you got an upgrade.

Ive seen this before. It looks like your computer overheated from the High content of porn you were downloading. I hate it when that happens. ![[dance]](graemlins/dance.gif)

It looks as if the power wires shorted. But, you could be lucky in that it may be the power supply took a dump. Around $100 give or take, assuming it didn't take out anything else with it...

Where can I buy one? and how can I know if my motherboard went with it, without losing any money I spend on the power supply? Thanks

take it apart and find out what burned.
my guess, judging by the pics and location of the smoke area, I'd look at the power supply first, it may have been something internal in the power supply that blew up like a capacitor.
how to tell if something else didn't go with it?
take the power supply out of your roommates computer and hook it up to yours and see if it boots.

alienware is overpriced and overrated. anyways, that dell posted is perfectly fine for everyday tasks, but you should definitely find out what actually burned out. that way, you can at least salvage what's fine and replace what's not. [ May 03, 2006, 04:24 AM: Message edited by: tonster ]

Quite a few things could have caused that meltdown. Faulty Power supply, faulty cooling, mobo overheated. I am assuming the chip want ovverclocked or anything right? Anyway Dells are pretty good right now. I would check them out. Dont go for their lower teir e-machines or whatever those are crap. also checkout www.ibuypower.com their prices are so low it seems unreal. I bought one computer from there and it is still doing good. But I decided to go with Alienware for all my employees. good luck

Just some advice on your next computer. For what you want (internet,etc...) you need RAM and a big hard drive. That will pretty much do it, a big hard drive to store the videos and songs, and a gig of ram to make those internet sites move quickly.

well not to get technical but RAM really wont help your browsing for the most part. But yes RAM is a must these days anyway. ALot of programs are calling for 1gb as a requirement these days.
to big hard drive.

RAM won't help your browsing at all. RAM is just for the computer. (Making programs open quicker, making noninternet programs compute faster like games, browsing on the computer files, etc.) What makes the internet slow is your internet connection. If you don't have a fast connection you won't have fast browsing.

well RAM does help a bit. IE will launch faster, Active X controls respond better and if you are accessing a web app the has some kind of shell access. But yea most people dont care about that stuff.

Yeah it will launch faster but it won't help pages load quicker at all.

overrated? when i got mine, my friend purchased the TOP OF THE LINE dell (a yr ago), we benchmarked em....i toasted his machine. my benchmarks went through the roof. and if you open the machines up, youll see that a dell is completely packed and very little room for ventilation. but on a HIGHEND machine, youll notice a complete difference in that area. but ya, they are expensive, but you get what you pay for. im a designer, so i need the power machine..... Thanks for all the replies. I will check out the computers power supply. My roommates just got new computers and I know they WON'T let me open theirs up to do this, plus I wouldn't want to do it just incase of something happening. So I need to find another one. As for the SONY computers. Mine has been perfect, other than some viruses here and there. But other than that the computer ran fine for the past 4-5 years.
Im going to search the net for the next hour and see some DELL deals and post them up and let me know if these are good setups. I realize the one that I posted on the first page is not that good, or I should say I'm willing to fork over a little more money than that. So I'll be back shortly to see if there are some good deals that I should buy. Thanks

"Dude you got a DELL?"
Have you thought about taking it to a Computer Repair shop and have them check it out? Or Best Buy "Geek Squad".
I took my supposedly "fried" computer to a shop and they said it was the harness to the motherboard or or something along those lines that was the cause. $150 and I was set. That included some lost data I needed to get recovered as well.

don't really wanna get into an argument, but comparing a dell to an alienware isn't the greatest comparison. anyways, for 2/3 the price or even less of a given alienware, one can easily build his or her own machine that's just as good, if not better. unlike before, today oem's offer no real advantage other than offering a pre-built system. anything and everything they use (minus their cases and other proprietary stuff) can be purchased at fry's, newegg, zzf, etc. for much less. and when you see alienware's benchmarking higher than other comparable oem's, its honestly all in the setup, not the hardware. and this superior ventilation and cooling and what not they claim to have, is easily achievable by any average joe.
