I'm thinking you going hit the leaf springs. 8.8 can be done but it's wider than stock.

I had a 8.8 from an explorer modified. Basically I cut the long side of the axle housing to accept the shorter axle. This gave me 31 splined axles, LSD, plus 3.73 gears, and rear disc brakes.

Can't remember, but I know it wasn't more than $200 at Rearend Specialties in Santa Clara. I also had them install the gears and replace the bearings [ February 24, 2011, 12:30 AM: Message edited by: RRRCobraSC281 ]

If you going to do all that work anyway, why not put a 9" in there?

Yes I am going to do all the work but if I can save money by putting in a rear end that I already own I would save a bunch but I do have a line on a ford 9" that has the disc brakes and the width is shorter then a stock 66' 8 rear end so if the price is right I'll go that route

depending on what suspension set up you go with, the 8.8 may work. I know with alstons rear suspenion setup that is the watts link or the 4 link, you have to weld your rear end to it anyway, same with griggs rear suspension.

Thanks I'll look into that
