so i had my friend look over my turning off issues in the 88 and he told me the computer is starting to go out. i got 2 different computerz from some friendz and still didnt work. so my friend took minez and tried it on his and mine is bad.
so question is..can i use just any computer from a 87-93 or do i have to get one from that exact year and theres something about some numberz on the computer? so how does all this work out. thankz

I do not think u can hook up just any ECU. I believe they have to be all specific to whatever year harness you are using. I just ran into this situation doing a conversion on my son's 4 banger coupe. I used a 1989 5 speed donor car for the swap. It had an 8LD computer which is for a manual. I changed it over to an automatic (at least for his first year driving) and have an A9P (automatic ECU) in my personal 1990 Mustang 5.0 that I converted to a 5 speed. I thought I would just swap the ECU's since hearing a few horror stories of using a manual ECU for an automatic. But, guess what? They both did not work, but works fine with each respective harness. This is just my experience. Maybe others had experienced something different? I don't know.

An 8LD is an California 1988 MAF 5 speed computer (California was first to get MAF which used this computer) The EEC-IV computers will work from 1988 MAF to 1993, An automatic computer will work in a 5 speed car but not the other way around.. ie 5 speed computer in an AOD The harnesses are not compatible however from year to year in most cases. The break down is as follows: 1987 can use CA 1988/1989 harness to convert to MAF 1988 and 1989 are same harness, only difference is the 88's rectangle Hitachi MAF sensor conncetor, this can be converted to common oval connector. 1990 is year specific 1991-mid 1992 is year specific mid 1992-1993 is year specific (2 relays at MAF meter location) [ February 13, 2011, 01:20 PM: Message edited by: Musttanguy ]

1988 MAF/ auto would probably have either an 8LF or 8LG You can use with 5 speed.
