I am going to be removing the engine from my stang for the first time and i was wondering how hard this would be. how many motor mounts are there

2 motor mounts, 21mm nuts. Are you removing the engine with the transmission still in the car? Make sure everything is disconnected(wiring, exhaust, hoses, tranny, etc)

well im goin to be swapping the motors. would it be easier to pull the engine and tranny out together and then just put the tranny on to the new motor.

just drop the tranny and pull the motor. Then drop in the new motor, then attach the tranny.

The easiest way is to leave the bell housing attached to the motor. There are four bolts that hold the tranny onto the bell housing.

You'll also need a cherry picker, engine stand, and a buddy or two.

can you do that? can you simply unbolt the belt housing from the tranny first? will it just drop down or do u have to pull it out? thanks. i'm removing my tranny today and am looking for info to make it easier.. The way i've done it before was by unbolting the 6 or was it 8 bolts that connect the belthousing to the engine.. getting the two bolts on top is a biatch.. can i simply unbolt the four bolts securing the tranny to the bellhousing first? thanks. pd: this is on a tremec 3550.

he he.. thing is almost out.. hardest part was getting those darned driveshaft bolts out. Brandon, if you are still there.. if i take the four bolts out.. will the tranny drop right down or am i still pulling it back.. clutch fork will stay inside the bell housing. after you unbolt the 4 bolts, pull he tranny back then down.

Just put the car on jack stands really high up, and put a board on your jack, then you can kinda wheel it away, and lower it down.

When you put the new motor in, you CAN install the tranny and engine, all at the same time, as once piece.
I bolted my drivetrain up to the block and installed everything last night in one fell swoop. With my friends help, it was cake.

Did you just have to remove the radiator to get enough room? Did you have to put the accessories on the motor after it was in the car?

i've heard of people doing this.. we were about to do it this way on my friends roller, but it seemed like the car would have had to be way way up for the tranny to be able to go at an angle enough to make it work. Losbadgt just dropped another engine and what he said he did was jacked the tranny way up so the input shaft would be at an angle and kinda lined up the engine with the tranny as he dropped the engine in place. i've never heard of that being done.. but he said, it only took a couple of minutes to get it to line up.

I'm not sure what others have done and I am sure whatever they did worked great. What I do know, is that bolting the bellhousing and tranny up to the block, while it hung on my engine hoist, was the fastest and easiest thing I have ever done. Then, I simply swung the entire thing over the fender and slid it all in. Having the tranny and bellhousing bolted to the block made everything hang at an angle, so installation went even smoother than I thought. What I did was basically push the motor/tranny in while simultaniously lowering the hoist. (It takes 2 people to do this by the way) As my buddy would guide everything into place, I would slowly lower the hoist and push it forward at the same time. I DID NOT have to jack up the car. As a matter of fact, I didn't have to do anything but extend the hoist out to the 1/2 ton slot and lower everything in; nice and slow. Then, with tension still holding the motor, I installed the TRANNY mount. Then, I lifted the motor one more time so it could center itself (it wasn't off more than 1/4 inch) and then dropped it in where it now sits perfectly.
Removing everything from the car is exactly the same but in reverse. Yes, I had to remove the radiator and all front accessories.
On a side note, while the engine was out I hid all wires/solenoids/relays inside the fenders. My engine bay looks nice. I should have painted it but that will happen the next time the motor comes out
I documented every step of my engine removal/install (and all things in between) so if anyone wants pics, let me know.
