just at idle it is running at 200 with a 180 t stat in it it is the second stat i have put in i have a 2 core rad and a black magic fan is this to hot or should i be ok it is a bran new motor carbed 331 with afrs any help is appreciated

Who made the motor? DSS maybe? 200 isn't all that hot for a brand new motor not broken in. Did you burp the motor really well? I'd just keep a real close eye on it when you first take it out. Sometimes things just need to losen up a bit. [ March 20, 2004, 09:13 AM: Message edited by: mtbaughs ]

i had a machine shop do all the work and i assembled it and yes it is at the shop and i will be there on monday steve i did get a good burp out of it but i still dont get how at idle it is at 200 with a 180 stat

yes it would, DO NOT RUN WITHOUT A T-STAT. You will cause alot of wear on the engine. I would not recommened going under a 180.

If it's a 200 at idle does it drop to 180 under load...are you underdriving your waterpump maybe and this is causing to not cool the car anough at idle

even if your radiator is full with coolant/water, there can still be air pockets within the cooling system. this happens often when people put in new thermostats because the t-stat hasnt opened completely when they "fill" their motor with coolant; as soon as the t-stat opens, they no longer are completely full.
