[/qb]
The problem is, it is way too easy for people to get their hands on guns. I own guns, hunting guns, guns that are way more powerful and accurate than assault weapons but that are in no way designed to work in close quarters. The fact that people can get there hands on guns designed to kill people is absurd. I go to the range frequently, MOST, not just a few guys carrying assault weapons don't know how to handle the weapon and can't shoot for shit. They shoot human silhouettes, what kind of fantasy do you think there are playing in there mind? Nothing good. A lot of folks buy these guns for self defense. Please, a lot of good your home defense weapon is going to do when some nut job is storming your kid's school. Banning one kind of gun is not easy, but it's something even the brainwashed legions of NRA members need to start thinking about, a little compromise. Will banning assault weapons end these types of incidents, probably not, the Maryland dudes did a lot of damage with a bolt action rifle. But, the majority of these incidents are carried out with assault weapons, it would mean much fewer of these incidents. [/qb]
I'm trying to understand what you are saying here. I just spent 5 minutes reading and re-reading your post but I'm speechless. Just so much there that is wrong I don't know where to begin. [/qb]
It's a simple message John, compromise. Give me one good practical reason for owning an assault rifle. A practical reason, not a political one. [/qb]
Actually, there are quite a few reasons. First of all weapons are meant to kill, on that I'm sure we agree, whether it's a deer or a human they have a single purpose, to kill. There isn't much difference between the size of a standard AR-15 and a hunting rifle for "close quarters" engagement. I just can't wrap my head around your comment about "The fact that people can get there hands on guns designed to kill people is absurd." To me, that comment is what is absurd since all guns are meant to kill. There is no way ANY ban on ANY type of weapon will prevent this type of tragic situation from happening. If all high capacity weapons were banned tomorrow, which will probably be the case, these events can not be stopped. There are literally tens of millions of high capacity weapons already in peoples hands. Are you suggesting that the government conficate them? That will never happen and banning them now will not reduce any possible future incidents from occuring. I totally don't understand your comment about the NRA. What you said sounded more like an anti gun person the an NRA supporter. The comment about using human silhouette's at the range is not a crazy practice if you have home defense in mind. That's how you practice for home defense. I would not use a deer silhouette at the range if I planned to shoot an intruder...would you? Okay "assault rifle's". First of all an AR-15 is NOT an assault weapon. That term is used by people who do not understand where the term comes from. An assault rifle is a military rifle that is select fire. It can fire semi auto, full auto or in today's military, 3 round bursts. A civilian rifle is a rifle, is a rifle, is a rifle...period. The capacity of the magazine does not qualify a rifle as an assault rifle, only the fact that it is not fully automatic does that. So if you want to outlaw semi auto high capacity weapons then you bring in every semi auto pistol that exists in this country. Now we're talking about semi rifles and semi pistols numbering probably over 50 million in the US. So where do we go from here? Start with outlawing semi auto high capicity rifles. Next high capacity semi pistols. Won't stop the problem. Next confiscate all semi auto high capacity rifles and pistols. Ain't gonna happen without a MAJOR civil war. Anyway, I sometimes use Zombie targets at the range. I guess I'm really gone in the head. [/qb]
I still haven't heard one practical reason for owning an assault rifle. You're statements regarding "assault" are getting into semantics. A semi auto AR15 is a much more efficient killing tool than a model 700 Remington bolt action rifle. Have you read the monthly NRA magazine? There are usually two decent articles about historical weapons or new toys and the rest of it is them trying to ram their politics down your throat. As a hunter, I see semi rifles and pistols as just toys for shooting paper. I have no use for them. I'm sure you're a normal person who enjoys it as a hobby but I see so many people at the range who have no business handling a gun and here they are with a gun that could kill a lot of people in a very short time. [/qb]
Because you have no use for them doesn't mean I shouldn't own them. Perhaps there are some out there that see your hunting rifle as a threat and may someday what them banned as well. Ya just never know. The practical reason for having an assault rifle is for the military to effectively fight wars. It's not semantics. You keep saying assault rifle and you are wrong. Your Remington 700 is also used as a sniper rifle for the military but I would be wrong to refer to your toy as a sniper rifle to define it. In fact, your 700 is much closer to being a military tool for sniping then anyones semi auto AR is to being a military rifle. No military person would take an AR-15 into combat but that 700 with a good scope....hmmm. As for a good reason to own an AR, AK, etc? See this picture? They don't even have hunting rifles, only stones. I'm pretty sure when the founding fathers created the second amendment they didn't do it so citizens could legally have weapons to hunt.
