Whats up CAFords.
So I need some advice...
A couple month back I was suppose to be transferred down to the LA area. The company was going to pay for all housing expenses as well as provide a car allowance, which would of given me the opportunity to sell my cars and buy the car I wanted.
Unfortunately, the project in LA was put on hold which resulted to the housing and car allowance put on hold. I wasn't able to buy a new car, but no biggie, I like the cars I have. Instead of being transferred to LA, I got transferred to San Jose.
Heres the issue, I like in Fairfield and my round trip commute totals 140 miles. Driving a v8 140 miles isn't really economical, especially with the gas prices going up and not stopping any time soon...
I'm having to fill up 3 times a week, at $50 each fill, its coming to about $150 a week. I get paid pretty well but I don't see spending this much justifiable.
I've come with the idea of selling my 93 cobra for a more economical car, possibly a hybrid for every day commute.
What would CAFords do? What car would you buy for commuting? I REALLY don't feel like having monthly payments...so I would like to buy something that would be close to the value of the 93 cobra....

Damn man, I don't know how you can do it. I've thought about selling mine, made the for sale ad and everything. But just can't do it, think of how'd you feel driving a Eco car and seeing a 93 cobra on your commute. I vote buy a beater civic to get you by until your work situation works out. Then you can get what you really want.

is the cobra your only "fun/hobby" car? If so, what other car(s) do you have? Have you considered selling any of your other cars? Personally, I NEED to have at least one toy, whether it be a mustang or a motorcycle. If you have funds for it, I say get a reliable DD like a civic, camry, etc and just keep the cobra. If funds are tight, which is very understandable nowadays, maybe you can consider possibly dumping one of the other cars.

1.) How much is the "bucket" gonna cost? 2.) What gas mileage will it get? 3.) What will registration/insurance cost you for the 2nd car? 4.) Keep in mind the 2nd car will require maintanence! 5.) How long do you have to own the "bucket" for it to become cheaper to go that route than to just keep the V8 and drive it as you are.
Far too often people look at it like, "I'll just buy a fuel efficient bucket" while ignoring points 1-4 above.
Good luck Luke

Had this issue last year (Alameda to SJ in my 03). I was spending about $600 on gas every month, so I went ahead and bought a 2002 Focus and now I'm spending about $250 a month on gas.
The car cost a total of $2130 including registration.
$600-$250 = $350
$350x12 = $4200
In one year, I will have covered my expenditures and will have saved about $2100 in fuel costs... Get yourself a little rider.

I think you should keep your Cobra. I used to daily drive Volkswagon's and my Accord while my LX and Cobra got weekend drives.
You can finance a 10K car for a couple hundred a month. This would be enough to have a reliable car and something comfortable to get you around.
00 and 02 V6 Accords go for 6-8K depending on miles and condition. You can drive it for a few years, put miles on it and sell it for a decent price before it would need major repairs.
Good Luck!

keep the cobra, get something like a CRX, camry, corolla, civic, accord, maxima, altima, something like that not too new or too old with fair mileage, thats what i would buy
keep in mind, you dont have to worry about wrecking the cobra or getting it stolen in your commute...PEACE OF MIND! if you ask me
but let that be your decision [ March 09, 2011, 09:58 PM: Message edited by: dubfive-0 ]

Thanks everyone for the responses. Its definitely alot to think about....
The issue I'm having with buy a beater is that would be my 3rd car. Although having a beater would be nice, I just don't have the room for a 3rd car.
I'm not currently commuting with the Cobra, I commute with my 02 Mustang, so the Cobra just sits in the garage...and although I love the Cobra, have put alot of time and money into, and had alot of plans for it...I have a little too much sentimental value for the 02...which is why I would sell the Cobra.
Anyways, thanks again guys for the advice...

You like the '02 better, who cares what anyone else thinks. Keep the '02 as a toy, and save up a little fun money now and then to continue modding it. Sell the cobra and buy a commuter car with cash. I drive a SVT focus everyday and it's a great car, really fun to drive. I used to have a regular focus and that car wasn't that bad either. Anything Honda is pretty much bullet proof as well.

You say you get paid pretty well I found a bunch of cheap commuters around 3k for like a 03' camry 4 banger if you don't mind a salvage title and insurance for just liability is like $200 a yr and hardly no maintainence just change your oil every 4k miles the. You can keep the toys and get collector car insurance since you won't be putting major miles on them and that's like $250 a yr for 6000 miles a yr so I would go that route.

The money isn't really much of a problem, I just cant justify having 3 cars...and I simply don't have any room to store a 3rd car. For that reason, I need to sell one of the cars...
