did a job at a customers house and he gave me a dell xps400 but its missing the hard drive thinking he took it out so no one could look at his personel stuff just want to know if i got somthing worth messing with and buying a hard drive for and if im going to have problems with the operating system it has the windows key on it but not sure i i can use it. always wanted to mess around with a computer just want to know if this is worth it. it looks like it use to run xp and has a pentium d

u can buy a new hard drive at any computer store, best buy, fry's, etc for about $80. You'll need to get a copy of Windows and any software you need to go with it.

yeah my friend said frys has sales on like tarabite hard drives for like 80 bucks sometimes but if i dont have the windows disc and key were talking alot of money unless i get a bootleg copy is that to crazy to ask for on a forum you know like asking for an illegal smog lol dont want to overstep my bounderies

The computer is prob worth as much as a hew hard drive. The windows key is a legit oem key. Just call dell and request a copy of it or download whatever XP version key you have. If it has any hardware problems I wouldn't bother fixing it.

I would contact dell and see if you can get the restore cds or something. You are bound to have to search for drivers if not. oh and dell disply drivers suck. I would grab drivers from laptop2video.

But keep in mind, the operating system alone isn't going to be very useful. You need lots of software to actually do stuff.

dude support.dell.com and put your service tag in and it will give you all the drivers you need. Do this shit like every day, Lenovos are so much better for driver install.
