Its not mysterious, he has a sever bacterial infection of his intestinal track. He was even in ICU for a few days. Pretty sever. It was in a newspaper article in his home town (not something UFC will ever say).

Diverticulitis is what occurs after Diverticulosis, they are small sacks in the large intestine (colon) that can burst and release fecal matter and bacteria into the body.

Actually the steroids probably had little to no effect on his health. Most doctors agree that when taken properly, steroids are not nearly as bad as most things people put in there body. Diverticulosis can be hereditary or could come from an unbalanced diet/un-managed stress.
