Does anyone know what the process is if I were to buy a car from out of state and then register it here in CA?

What if the car was originally a CA car, was registered in another state for ~2 yrs, and then brought back to CA?

What does DMV physically look for, if anything, in order to have it registered here again?

Thanks!

exactly what he said and the dmv just looks at the vin and mileage to see that it matches the paperwork

Yes the mileage issue is a big deal! Run carfax on it and make sure the mileage matches and is correct. if not its a nightmare!!!!

Do they check for air bags, seat belts, etc?

Just registered all my cars to CA from AZ this week. They popped the hood to check for some sticker and checked the vin. They didn't check for any thing else. Pretty painless process.

I've done this twice in the last few years. It's a two step process, you need to do a vin verification with the inspectors and then go to the counter for registration.

The first time I did it, I went to the counter first who gave me the VIN verification form, then had to wait a long time for inspection, then return to the counter. It took about 1/2 a day.

The second time I downloaded the form first, got in line for vehicle inspection at 7:30 am (was #2 in line) got the paperwork completed then went in for my appt. Was out of there in an hour.

You'll also need to have the title, current registration (Form REG343), bill of sale, & odometer disclosure (if less than 10 yrs old), smog if after 75 and the transfer paperwork completed.

Here's the link to the VIN verification form (complete the info ahead of time):
