Anyone in San Jose know where I could get my IRS cover resealed? It currently has a leak and I want to fix it. If it comes out to be way to much, I might just do it myself.

The Labor time to remove and install the diff cover is 5 hours. In order to get the cover off, the IRS has to ripped apart; axels, brakes, braces and then you have to apply the sealant and put everything back together. No way in hell can all of that work be done in 1 hour.

/\ I never said it can be done in an hour,I stated that this is a medium skilled job and a shop shouldn't be charging an arm and a leg to do this work..I got PLENTY IRS work experience and kno them very well,if it takes you 5 hrs for this job your a turtle.....

Like I said, book time to do the IRS cobra diff cover is 5 hours. How fast can you do an IRS cobra diff cover r&r?

I have totally overhauled the IRS in my car and I can say that 5 hours is a fair time.
remember that the brakes, axels, knuckles, IRS pumkin support braces all have to come off before you can even touch the cover. Once you get to the cover, you have to clean off the old sealant and then you can re seal it. Once you are done with that, you have to put the IRS all back together and add gear oil. It's quite a job to do and charging $500 worth of labor to do it is a fair price.

I'm curious, how long would it take you to do an IRS cover reseal?

2-2.5 hrs TOPS..at $100 that's $50 an hour,I'd say that's plenty fair of a price to pay......

A joe blow shade tree mechanic will have those prices but you think a shop is charging $50 an hour your a fool.

Lol far from a shade tree mechanic believe me,I only charge by the job on a small task like this, when it comes to a full motor or trans jobs yes i charge book time generally it's a different ball game fellas...and with fair prices brings a ton of work, high prices push people away cause they always think there's somembody else cheaper, without a buisness side job hustle isn't easy to be competitive...

I'm talking about discounted work in general mostly. You own a shop and only charge about $50? With rent and all that's hard to keep the lights on.

Posted by SIC9250 (Member # 8216) on :

/\ never claimed to own a shop [Confused] I work out of a shop thats a buisness and when it's slow I bring in side work on top of the normal day to day work.....

Congratulations. 2.5 hours is faster than I can do it. By the way, an average Bay area automotive repair shop hourly labor rate is $100. Furthermore, the book time to R&R a Cobra IRS diff cover is 5.5 hours.

A shop that quotes 2.5 hours at $50 for a Cobra IRS cover reseal job would go broke if kept underestimating jobs so low like that. LOL
