Man I have to give it up to GM on the 3.8L. These engines kick ass. Why does fords v6 of the time suck?

So with that said which engine is the best ever made?

the forged roller 5.0 motor definaltey belongs somwher on that list,

i think the orgi 289 that came in the 65 mustangs
were pretty much bullet proof.

diesels are impressive nowadays.. u got people in huge lifted trucks running with sports cars in the 1/4..

and the 426 hemi?

As in Best do you mean power or reliability?

for power, the old pushrod motors fall low on the list in terms of hp per cubic inch. DOHC rape OVH engines

Posted by MikeD. (Member # 8060) on :

Probably the LS motor.

Ford has had many good v6's 2.8 3.0 4.0 4.2..... And the new one in the mustang is impressive for a v6 and in the f150 they have the ecco boost v6.... Don't forget the legendary inline 4.9 300.

I'm a big fan of the 460 too I have had several and they are bulletproof

Id have to go with the Chevy 4.8. I see so many of these early 2000 silverado/suburbans/tahoes come into work with almost 300k miles and they still run like a champ. If I were to pick something else.. the chevy LS and ford 302s

I think all around engines Would be the Jeep 4.0, Toyota r22 and Ford straight six 4.0. To think about mostly any straight engine has been good. And now diesel engines are another beast

Posted by SIC70STANG (Member # 4347) on :

i dont think fords new 5.0 can be on this list. it has not been around long enough. i mean maybe when people are racing on 170k mile blocks ill be impressed.

+1! You can look at the majority of hotrods, the are powered by a small block Chevy..

To be honest, those 2JZ's are capable of 1000RWHP without touching the bottom end. Thats remarkable and some serious quality control, even the NA 2JZ's make well beyond 650RWHP without being touched.

Next in line, I'd have to hand it to LSX's & 302's. The 302 can be beat on and they just don't quit, the engines more often then not outlive the car!

The LSX's like any other pushrod engine, without more cam's make good power on their own out the box.

Honda F20C/F22C1: revs to 9,000rpm, makes 120+hp per liter while retaining amazing reliability and fuel efficiency. Essentially Ferrari-level engineering but much smaller and affordable.

Toyota 2JZ-GTE: can make insane horsepower with light mods and retains reliability

GM LS-line: proves that the outdated overhead-valve pushrod architecture is still viable after over 50 years. Fairly reliable with decent fuel economy. Makes awesome power simply by relieving factory restrictions.

As for some of the other mentions in this thread, really? The Ford 302? I mean i get it's a beloved engine and all, but we're talking about the best engine ever made... the new 3.7 V6 in the 2011 Mustang makes more power than ANY production 302 offered by Ford straight off the showroom floor.

As for the new 2011 Coyote 5.0, it's an awesome engine for sure, but there are smaller engines making more horsepower, not to mention the motor hasn't really been out long enough to fully judge it just yet... the aftermarket is just getting started with it, and we have no idea if they'll go 100,000-150,000 miles of hard use without issues.

Now if the thread was titled "Best FORD Engine Ever Made" maybe the old and new 302's would be a realistic option. But even then, i'd say the DOHC 5.4 in the GT500/Ford GT is one of the best engines Ford has ever made. 500-600-700rwhp easy. 1,000rwhp not too much of a stretch.

I also have to mention the Porsche Carrera GT's naturally aspirated V10... it's not the most efficient motor or most reliable... but in my opinion it's the best sounding motor ever made...

302 gets the nod because it's powered the only muscle car that has stayed in production since the it's introduction. It has to be doing something right.

All time for me is the BMW S70/2. Over 600hp, passes CA emissions, and propelled the McLaren F1 240mph over 20 years ago.
