This time however it was with my camera. Randomly came across this guy while going to the store in Elk Grove. I just happened to have my camera and the owner was there when I parked. Younger hispanic guy who was real cool and shot the shit with me for a second. Check out the pics and let me know what you think about the angles and such. Cagedblackgt took the liberty of cleaning them up a little and did a excellent job.

Good work! First thing I do is meter the black car. You'll get the exposure spot on. As far as angles go just experiment with different angles that the eye normally does not see.

What do you mean when you say "meter?" Is that something youu do by eye or with the camera?

The camera has a light metering system that determines the best settings.

There are 3 different types (full frame, center weighted and spot metering).

To get proper exposure on the car (especially blac) you need to get center weighted and/or spot metering.

All of the pics you had sent me, had the car underexposed by a stop or so, so I had to bring them up. This is because in Full (matrix) metering , it was exposing a lot for the background (which is brighter then the car).

So with the other ones, you can meter more for the car instead of the background

Hope that makes sense lol

I think its this older dude, i've spoken to him because he's a customer of ours. He babies the shit out of that vette, wiping it down everytime he gets out of it. He's a cool dude and he loves the shit out of that car.

Very nice! Beautiful car. The critic in me doesn't like the front lip and rocker extensions though. They muck up the lines of the car.

Mike the metering explanation does make sense, but to fully comprehend I will have to take 3 shots of the same picture in each mode so I can visualize the difference. But based on the color of the car or item that your trying to photograph it changes the way the camera focuses the light right?

And thanks for the kudos on the pics. The car was real bad ass in person. Not a chevy guy but that car is well put together. The wheel and brake system is what really caught my eye. The owner was a younger guy in his mid-late 20's. Apparently he had a twin turbo 350z previously and sold it to get the Z'oh. Forget his name now though since this was a week ago

I wish. My car was still in the shop so I was rollin my lil sisters chevy mailbu. "The bu thang."

Given my power levels it would have been a good run. I think those make 500-550 at the crank and I probably make 500 or so. Then again aerodynamics are not on my side

Hey Terrance, this is why its best to get out of Auto mode on the camera and use full manual. That way you can set the exposure to exactly how you would like. Just takes time, but the composition of the above pics was good for the most part!

The best advice for a DSLR is SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT and more SHOOT.

i'd hate to say T but that Z06 wouldve been your first loss. not only aero dynamically better but alot lighter. tcarbon fiber fenders, they make around 480 rwhp. thats if it was stock with stock exhaust.

Terrance, the pics look great IMO, & are much improved over your Berryessa pics. The only thing that throws them off is that there is too much clutter from the trees, poles & such looking like they are growing out of the car. Of course this was most likely unavoidable given the location, but its always something to keep in mind when shooting cars.

BTW, I know the Cobra seems pretty fast, & actually it probably is, but you would not stand a chance against even a stock C6 Z06, unless the driver couldn't drive worth a damn. Those cars are beasts right off the showroom floor. I remember when Streakmatt & myself were riding in his fox, & he got to run a basically stock 1 on the street. Although he did win each & every time against the Z, the car was right on his heels every run. Keep in mind that Matt's fox was already in the low 10's at this point & was trapping in the mid to high 130's...

It might have been close for the 1/2nd gear. After that if the dude can drive its tail lights. They have a guy on the corvette forums that ran upper 10's with DR's otherwise stock z06.

They don't make 480 to the wheels stock. They're "only" 505 at the crank so you're saying they only lose 5% through the drivetrain? They usually make low to mid 430's stock, depending on the dyno.

So what your saying is that I could in fact beat if not seriously almost beat a relatively stock c6 z06?

correction..yea your right that depends on the dyno. completly stock 440-460. if they change the intake and nothng else they make around 480.

I'm sure there are videos of z06's gettn beat by cobras also. But the fact remains that our power levels are similar, therefore winning is a possibility. And all I need is a chance. C6 Z06's here I come!!!!!

^^Fixed for you T! [Big Grin]

You are forgetting power to weight ratio T. C6 Z is almost 600 lbs. lighter bro. You would need almost 100 hp more than one to pull on it.

I'm saying that you could give one a good run. You have a slight edge in power (30-40hp) and a big edge in torque. The only thing that levels the playing field is that they're about 400lbs lighter.

I would take a slightly used c6 zo6 over the new shelby. the new shelby's are over 50k new! you can get a 08 c6 zo6 for that or less. hell all a c5 zo6 needs to beat a pullied cobra is a cam and longtubes....

You must have fucked up credit! [Razz] if I financed 50k for 7 years I would pay $715.00 a month. on a new car for 7 years if I went used I would pay 950 a month for 5 years. Hypothetically, I would put some money down to lower my payments or trade in a car etc. My insurance would be WELL under 300 a month as well for full coverage. in the end I guess it's about what you can afford. I just can't see paying over 50k for a mustang...

Oh I am in agreement lol, I wouldnt spen 50k or more on a stang. And yes I want a vette, but there are other used cars I would get over a vette for the same price.... a used viper comes to mind lol, if im gonna spend up to 1k a month on something it better look gnarly [Razz]

HEFTY difference in insurance and car payment lol
I would take a slightly used c6 zo6 over the new shelby. the new shelby's are over 50k new! you can get a 08 c6 zo6 for that or less. hell all a c5 zo6 needs to beat a pullied cobra is a cam and longtubes....
ya even at 50k though your payments are still north of 1k, and insurance (if you have a couple o tickets) is gonna be 2-300 a month
And yes I want a vette, but there are other used cars I would get over a vette for the same price.... a used viper comes to mind lol, if im gonna spend up to 1k a month on something it better look gnarly [Razz]
i like the zo6's better than vipers. i would not spend 1k a month on any one car. Like i said, i would put some money down to lower my payments. i ain't ballin like that ha ha ha!

The vipers just look unique to me, like when you see a ZO6 vetter you gotta look twice to make sure its a Z06, not really set apart from the base C6.

But ya 1k a month is large, i spend that on two cars every month lol

Heck yeah. The only races I admit defeat too are the ones I have actually lost. Once I get my ass handed to me by a C6 Z06 I will say I lost. Until then you should be looking at a 2.2 pulley so you can have a shot at beating me [burnout]

The C6 Zo6's are undoubtedly ballzy and not to be underestimated. I may get got now, however the careful application of fuel and boost solves all issues. The next one I see in a relatively safe location its on.

I ain't neva scurred [Razz]

Earth to Terrance.....ET phone home.....

C'mon brotha, smell the roses, until you get a whipple, the Cobra will not stand a chance against a lightly modded, or even a stock C6 Z06. Hell, I am willing to bet that even a bolt on 430hp LS3 C6 will give you a very close run.

port w/ a smaller pulley and you will be alright. but since you're a puss, that will never happen. besides you need to learn how to drive the car as it is now....

I already ran a c6 when my motor was hurt and by the end of 2nd I was pulling ahead. So until I come across a c6 Z06 and get walked, not barely beat, but walked I will stand by my 477 rear wheel all day

The ghost returns..... Yeah man you felt that tri-ax the other day. I have a feeling it will be my demise. The ported eaton numbers I saw on svtp made less torque and sometimes less hp than I got now with a lot more heat. I will just Learn the car "slow" for now and get what pointers I can from Matt then get a whipple/kb later...... We droppin that motor this weekend?

LOL, you probably raced an LS2 C6 Vette which were only rated @400hp. I find it hard to believe that your stock (at the time) 3,665lb, 390 hp car with a hurt motor could beat a 3,200 lb, 430 hp car unless the other driver wasn't racing at all...

So all these videos I showed you with decently modded Cobra's, even ported & pullied Cobra's getting spanked by stock & lightly modded Z06's mean nothing? Your car is a special case, or is touched by the hands of god, & your driving skills are that much more superior than all these drivers on the net that the outcome will be different in your case??? Good luck

I'm sure if I look hard enough I can find a video of a fiat beating a corvette. Not to say there's no validity in the video, but power wise on paper my car makes equal or greater power than a c6 z06. There's pullied cobras running around that make 430-450 at the wheels and there's those that make what I do. However I do appreciate your vote of confidence. Until I find a base C6 or Zo6 to run you can Pull the mach or the coupe out so you can see just how fast it is.... or isn't [Big Grin]

Damn T, once you get an 03 cobra you think you're the king of the world! Look at JeffS times with his 07 Z06

'07 Z06 Bone Stock on Stock Tires = 11.55 @ 126.6 / Bone Stock on DR's = 11.22 @ 125.6

Let me know when you get those times at the track and then maybe you could beat one? Or hopefully you run some old man that makes even longer submarine sandwiches than you in between shifts. [burnout]

Hell yeah. I hope nobody ever buys a car, puts money into it, then thinks its not the shit. I wish I would sit here like a chump and say "your right guys, my car that puts down 477/502 to the wheel and would walk most the cars in this thread is slow." If that's what you guys are hoping for then I would give up now.

The terminators I have seen in my power range trap 120-122 and hit 11.90's. You and I both know Jeff S is an above average driver as most vettes seen at sac raceway Hit 12's all day and nowhere near 125. My car pre-whipple is no slouch and can definitely hang with 80% of what's on the street. When I upgrade the blower I will go looking fot the other 20%

Sure pick on the slow guy to make your car look better. Until you get out to the track & run faster than my 12.73 (which I certainly hope you can do your 1st time out even on street tires), I'm still faster than you technically. & BTW, having Matt drive your car doesn't count LOL...

Never said anything about my car, or any of the cars in this thread being able to hang with the likes of your car, I said your car will NOT beat a C6 Z06... Also never said anything about your car being slow, once again, I said its not faster than a C6 Z06...

BTW, I see your sig, & noticed I'm not on the people you wanna race list anymore? Damn T, you get a Terminator & forget where you came from. I guess the 300rwhp cars aren't cool enough to be on that list [Frown]

Either way, its all love T, its all in good fun... I might just have to sell everything I have, plus maybe a kidney so I can go out & buy a C6 Z06 just so I can be faster than 50 Deep again LOL...

Speaking of a hit, I just might have to ruin your day, T. My car might be wearing a hit of a different kind. Just saying... [Big Grin]

I'm not sure yet. If anything I'm going to keep it stock and simple but with the 18 inch 03 cobra wheels. After that I will just save for a nice 2 piece mesh/forged wheel. These cars don't need as much to look pretty damn good, but its real easy to make em look bad with the wrong wheel/tire combo

Yaterstang When you get done running around message boards with my penis let me know so I can be there to check out the sloleen

I don't think the stockers would look bad at all assuming the car has a stance and a nice thick American brand 285-40-17 in the rear and a small spacer.

Luke refresh my memory, when you switched to the 18x10 rears did you still need a spacer or was it good? I see a lot of cats running a 3/8 spacer with the 18x10 wheels on these cars, but I don't remember needing one back when I had the 96

Remember, the track width of the 94-98 differs from the 99-up. With the typical 18x10 22mm Replica wheel, I like to run a 1/4" or 3/8" spacer on the back on a 94-98. With the 99-up, I don't think it would be needed with that same wheel.

On the other hand, I know Epik was/is running a 1/4" spacer on his Fr500s however, so maybe someone can chime in and comment on the track width comparing 99-04 SLA to 99-up IRS.

Terrance,

Your pictures look great. There are a few tips to improve them greatly, as previously mention. I don't take great pictures and am slow to learn cameras, but i've taken great classes.

The best improvement is to get the sun at your back and don't have trees or street lights coming out of the top of a car or someone's head. In your case, you were screwed. You couldn't move the trees and poles, or change the position of the sun, or car. (Also make sure the background is not competing for attention, like in front of a wall with graffiti, poles, trees, people or anything to distract from what it is you are showing.)

But you can change the exposure of the camera. The sun looked overhead and the sky was bright. For you to see the details of the grill and scoop and wheels etc, you would have to put your hand to your forehead to block out the bright sky. Your camera can't do that, but you can do at least 2 things. Oh and I try to always use the lens hood whenever I shoot pictures.

One, as mentioned, is to change the exposure reading of the camera. If you are looking into the light or in this case a very bright sky, you can't expose for both. It will never look as good as when the sun is behind you. But you can decide which is more important to look better. In this case you expose for the car and let the sky blow our a bright white.

Here's how you do it. Canon uses 3 light metering modes to judge the volume of light to let into the camera. 1 is called evaluative and reads light from the entire screen. Your camera was set on this. So when you have a car with a bright sky behind it, it says wow, there's too much light so it lets less light in and as a result the dark car gets darker and the sky is less bright, but still blown out. 2nd meterting mode is center weighted and meters the entire frame, but puts more reading of light from the center of the screen. 3rd is partial metering which on my canon measures all the light only from the center circle on the screen= 9% of the entire screen. Therefore it only meters the light say from the grill area.

But here's the trick. You have to put the center circle on what you want to be properly exposed, in this case the grill (front of the car). The car is now setting the exposure reading, not the bright sky. And of course the sky gets brighter or blown out when the pict is taken. The way to do it is you frame the car however you want, then shift the camera so the center circle is on the part you want to show ie grill (car) and push the button half way. This is what activated the metering and focusing. Then move the camera back to frame the pict you want to show and push the button the final half way.

Same thing with a group of people at different distances. (I leave on partial metering almost all the time. Some call it spot metering. All the animal photographers do this [and wide open aperture and aperture priority as you always get a pict, but not always on time priority]. Put the circle on the face of the person you want in focus to be exposed correctly. Say they are 12 wide and your subject is on the far right. Set the zoom to frame the picture you want. Or walk nearer or away to get it if using a fixed lens. Then focus on the face you want and push the button half way. This makes that person in focus and properly exposed. Then shift the camera back to include the group of 12 and push the button the rest of the way to take the pict.

Your picture exposing for the entire screen, especially the sky.

 -

Here's one much more difficult to show the car as the sun is almost directly looking into the camera. The car is the only thing I cared about so I set the metering to partial, spot or 9% of the area to limit the exposure setting to be assessed by what the circle is set on. I didn't have to reframe the shot much as he came to the line I waited til he took off and pressed the button. As I recall, I put the exposure circle on his face.

Notice the front end as lights area and firebird license area is more visible than yours, even the pepsi can, but the girls in the back and the sky is blown out. I sacrificed the back ground for the foreground with the car.

 -

Another way to verify exposure is to take a pict and look at the histogram. the peaks should end at each end, the light end (right) and the dark end (left). You may be able to se the camera so both the pic and histogram shows up after taking the picture. If the black lines are to one side, the exposure is off.

Off

 -

Better

 -

More spread out to the ends with going into the ends heavily is better, but you take what you get. After looking at the histogram, you can move the exposure by setting the camera to read lighter or darker. You do that here. This is a pict of what it looks like from the manuel. It's in the viewer on top of the camera.

 -

As an aside, all the canon pro photographers I ask and the instructors at nikon school, said during a class about 2005 that the exposure is off on the camera and as a matter of course, they leave the camera to + one third to + two thirds. ie the top picture would be an increase of + one. Don't know about current ones though.

And as said above, practice a lot. But you must keep written notes of what you did. Trust me, you won't remember.

Hell, bring them both. The trunk on T's Cobra might be big enough to have one hide in there and the other guy film. That might be just the ticket. [Big Grin]

You know, I am starting to hate the internets ability to find a picture of almost anything. 10 years ago, when I was 13, you couldn't just find a picture of a sumo wrestler in a pink tutu. Lol

cm4hawks Honestly man I'm not sure. I have seen/read threads about guys breaking the shafts in stock trim. Other times guys have ran 10's on the stock halfs. From the convo I had with Drew he said as long as you don't try to power through the wheel hop the shafts will hold up fine. But I can just see mine snapping if I look at em too hard.

Yeah foo I have the Billetflow brace powdercoated to match the car. That's one of the first things some of you OG's told me to get. But believe me the 5k dump will be more like a 5k clutch burn. Hopefully by the time I stab it I will only be at about 3k and right in my torque curve about to hit boooooooooooooooost [burnout]

Well that's the plan anyway...

That is some funny chit right there. HAHA I frequent Corvette forum and am another C5Z owner. I was really impressed on the respect the C6Z got around here. I am no hater to Mustangs or fricking Pintos for that matter. If you built it, love it, and run it, hell thats impressive to me. My car by no means is a monster but its what I got. I was in Sac a month ago and was impressed myself with my 11.42 slip and went home with a smile. I lost a run to a GIRL (in a C6Z) to a mustang, to a STI, etc.... Was I pissed Nah it was all good and at the end of the day I chopped it uwith all of them. I would love to run around a Cobra for the hell of it just to have one. Like I was told long ago. There is no replacement for displacement. Next time I go to Sac I will post up and would love to meet up with a few of you. You can beat on my Z and after well go drink beers and talk shit about it. HAHA Here are a few pics of the "Bling Machine" as we call it on Corvette Forum. HAHA It is Far from the fastest around here, but its mine and I worked hard as hell on it.

Teddysnca, welcome to the board. The Z06 is beautiful! You'll have to try and make one of the cruises we have now and then... a good mix of cars and folks. You wouldn't have had the only Vette on the last one. I did have the only 4 door though... [Big Grin]

Teddy thanks for the compliment man. I come through with a few good one liners every now and again. I'm glad you decided to check out the boards and I can see why they call it the bling machine. Its mad shiny. But yeah you will have to roll with us on out next meet or if your in the area we gotta line em up. Enjoy the boards

iceman & Epik Yes fellas the dyno queen will be out on the track soon, but being that its my only car I'm in no rush to break it. When I do bring it out I will be sure to have slicks and run my "other" tune

Your "other" tune? Is that the one where the driver mod is finely honed? [Razz]

Haha. Yeah this one has the footlong mode turned off so I should only be able to make 6 inch subs. I gotta see how well you shift that GXP. I haven't heard any stories of your skills yet

Hey Terrance just becareful jumping up almost 200hp is no joke and your mile an hr is going to be up a lot higher also. So that gives you little room for error! Get some seat time and get used to that power

HAHA Thanks guys. The yellow is an either love it or hate it, but I am fine with it. Car has 2 7" lcd screens in the trunk, a 15" L7 Kicker, 3000watts, etc... HAHA Hell my door panels are not stock and I managed to fit 13 speakers in a Z. [Smile] I good friend is having a fundraiser/car show next month in Tracy. If I posted here do you think I could get a few out. Its for a cause and does not have to be perfect. Hell my car is a 2 footer. HAHA As for lining up, yeah we can make it happen I have forced induction to. [Wink] 450 RWHP AND 600RWHP on nitrous. [Eek!]
