So I read the article on the cheap ass paint job with rollers lol. My mustang has been fading since the day I bought it but I could never bring myself to pay a ton of money to get it re-sprayed.

Since this is just a fox body and maybe worth $5k I figure what the hell so here is the beginning of the job. More photos to follow as progress progresses.

Feel free to flame me...I could give a fuck.

So I started with just the hood only. I wet sanded it with 220 on orbital sander. Found a quarter size ding in the process so I bondo that up. Otherwise hood is in great shape.

After wetsand with 220 and found ding:

After bondo on ding:

Mixing of the paint and thinner. I used 4oz. of thinner to each 8oz. of paint. Found that to be to thick and added another 1oz. of thinner:

Okay so that is only half of the first coat. Haven't done anything to it yet. going to finish up the ding so I can finish up the first coat but wanted to give ya'll an idea of how it's turning out. I think in the end it will pretty good.

That looks worse than the top of the fenders. I would stop before you mess up your whole car. A nice paint job is expensive for a reason...

Posted by Jdub07 (Member # 2728) on :

that isn't finished, wetsanded, buffed or anything of course it looks worse than the tops of the fenders right now lol. Great observation though

what article did you read? Also are using power tools or doing it by hand? My male ego has always told me I could do a paint job, but the reality of rolling a shit paint job always slap me back into reality...lol...Doesnt look bad so far.

Posted by silverLX (Member # 3207) on :

Another observation I made is that your using way too course sand paper. When body shops prep a car for paint, they use 1000grit on the old paint, if its not peeling or in need of primer. Maybe this roll on paint fills scratches like primer, but I know Dupont paint won't do that! 220 is for blocking primer. After that you would want to use 600 to get rid of the 220 sand scratches. Just a tip, I work at a body shop.

so far looks like ur doin a pretty nice job, good luck and keep it up [patriot]

Posted by Jdub07 (Member # 2728) on :

I just used 220 to put the top coat on...maybe I should have used 1000 first? I did get 800 and 2000. I'm going to wetsand first and second coat with 800 then 3rd coat with 2000.

Then wax and buff and wax and buff and see what happends.

Everything is by hand so far except the initial wetsand was with an orbital sander. After that everything has to be by hand.

Thanks for the info!

Even if it turns out awesome I'm only going to do the hood and top of car...rest of the cars paint is in pretty good shape. The fading has bothered me for years.

I do admit this the cheapest most ghetto thing I've done so far and if I step back and look at myself applying paint with a roller I feel like white trash. I hope it doesn't come out all fucked off.

It is going on very smooth though and even. I just hope I can get it to shine!

Don't know if I'll have the hood done by show time..I totally forgot about the show lol. If it isn't right by show time then I'll be drivin something else or entering the best beater class!

Thanks for the support guys. This does have disaster written all over it though hahhaahha. I finished the first full coat and will sand it and add the second coat tomorrow. It's still tacky right now otherwise I'd be out there working on it.

Will post photos after tomorrows wetsand and 2nd coat.

In the article I think it says to get it to shine is to buff bufff buffffff and wax and buff. So we'll see.

so does a paint shop have to strip this off when you realize you want a real paint job? seems like a lot of work to get it off... just thinkin you may like it know but you may want real paint someday to

Posted by Jdub07 (Member # 2728) on :

second wetsand on first coat with 800 grit and second coat of paint. Turning out a bit better. Tomorrow will wet sand with 2000 and put on third coat. Day after will do 4th coat and then see how it looks.

Here are some photos. Lighting is crap so it was hard to get a decent photo

thanks again guys...car looks even better this morning but I'm running late to work and can't get photos right now.

I don't think anyone is really hating,...just givin their two cents. I did say feel free to flame me lol. Besides it's not a $50 paint job. Mine is a Custom Walmart Paint.

ps. carshow this weekend don't forget!

It's starting to look good! Interesting that you are using the odorless spirits. I used the non-odorless kind because some people had problems with the odorless, but the only place I found it was Sherman-Williams.

Posted by Hozr (Member # 6196) on :

Cant wait for the results. I've wanted to try this for a while but haven't had the right car to do it with. I hear the wet sanding is the most work but if you get the paint thick enough (4 coats sounds like enough) you can sand it down to glass and polish it out.

What people forget is:

Automotive paint is expensive and meant to be used in a controlled atmosphere environment - no room for error. When there is an error it is readily apparent. Rustoleum and similar paints spend Millions of dollars on research to get a great appearance under the worst conditions. Under good conditions the result can be great and/or better than a mediocre auto job.

Good Luck!! Keep us posted

okay well its not a 'real' article...the work article sounds a bit more durable than 'roller paint talk on a forum.'

after doing some more searching I found that Topside paints for boats (namely Interlux Brightside) is much more durable and has UV inhibitors to resist fading, but its more that double the price per quart

Posted by BCINGUU (Member # 2397) on :

Brightside was what I used on my car. It worked great and produced a really shiny finish after only 2 coats. However, the paint job cost me $150 instead of $50. It was less work though.

Getting a tiny bit better. There is some orange peal of course but no bubbles. This is third coat with no buffing or wet sand. I'll be wet sanding once more with 2000 and 4th/last coat. Once set will wetsand and polish and post end results.

Most orange peal is front of hood where it drops down at a sharper angle. For whatever reason that is the hardest part for me.

LOL that is so true...

Last photos before my last wetsand and polish. This 4th coat set really well.

Any advice on wetsand and polish. My plan is 2000 grit wetsand and a turttle was rubbing compound that is supposed to polish out orange peal.

Give me your thoughts cause tomorrow I'm finishing the hood. Top of car will still look like shit and faded for the show lol.

So I'm hoping it will look better than these last two picks after the final polish.

looks like roller marks on this one but its mostly reflction of my hiddious garage :-(

use a polishing compound instead of a rubbing compound. Theres a difference. Rubbing compund can be used to get out heavy oxidation, swirls, and light scratches. Even after a rubbing compund is used you stil need to finish it with a polishing compund to bring back the shine/luster. I would go with a nice polishing compound, turtle wax makes a good one in a can. This method is for automotive paint though, but I think the same should apply here. Let me know how it comes out. Looks great so far [patriot]

uummmmmmmm,... so uh, yea and ummm stuff.... [Eek!]

Anyone have a veriable speed car polisher I can borrow in the Fremont area?

Posted by turbo50 (Member # 6700) on :

If you are still seeing alot of orange peel I dont think compound and polish is going to do squat for you.

I think you need to wet sand with 1000, then 2000 and then compound and polish.........BUT I am no expert I just remember what I did to remove orange peel on an old camaro I had years ago.

I also picked up a variable speed buffer/polisher at harbor freight for $40 bucks that came with alot of accesories and works GREAT!

Starts from 200rpm-1600rpm.

Yes, it even comes with a hook and loop you can use with 3m pads.

whats up? orangepeel?

Posted by Jdub07 (Member # 2728) on :

hard to explain - I've got one last ditch effort tonight to make it right.

But for the time being (sorry no photos of it) it looks about 100 times worse than before I started.

Posted by BCINGUU (Member # 2397) on :

You are working on the hardest part - the paint finish. It can be very frustrating. That is the point where I gave up and decided to take it in and have it sprayed professionally.

But if you stay with it you can make it work. If you want to do a quick and dirty finish for the show, try a very light coat of paint thinned almost 50%.

Or find somebody who will polish it for you as a side job, that shouldn't be too expensive.

Besingyou thanks for the advice and it was good talking to you yesterday at the show. If you get time to pm me that info that would be awesome. I brought the car as is to the show, seeing as I just put the hood up. I had fun on this project and think I'll keep at the hood just for polishing experiance but would really like to get the whole car painted. Your elenor looked better in person than the photos. Sorry you couldn't get the vert.
