Anyone ever done this job, some tutorials say to use cam lock tools, some say you can put the crank key way at 12 o clock not move the crank again and you can do it without the cam lock tools?

Does it matter where the existing links line up with the timing marks when the crank keyway is at 12 o'clock? The existing links are just a black line from a sharpie, they get close but don't quite line up. If I do it without the special tools what happens once the tensioners are removed, do they cams move a lot? Is it ok to move them left or right to get them to line up or can they only move one way?
