What year and model BMW? BMW is very limited on what you can do through the OBD port with a generic scanner. Depending on the year, (pre-2000), the OBD port is virtually worthless and you need to scan through the 20-pin connector in the engine bay. Your best bet for the Bimmer is to buy a K+DCan cable through eBay and load INPA (free) onto a laptop. You can do almost everything a full function dealer setup can do.

If both cars are newer than 1996 or some 1995 models in California it is OBD2 and you can read enough info to get you by. You can only use it for ready monitors codes and you can read live data and of course extinguish the SES lamp after a repair. You can also look up codes on some and also check emission readiness on just about all of them even cheap ones. Most scanners around 200 bucks can do what most novice mechanics would need. They can even be used for AIR BAGS and ABS for as little as 200 bucks as i say. We have systems like HP TUNERS for reprogramming ETC. A scanner by definition is a read only device. That is why it is called a scanner. You said you wanted to read codes so the hand held i turned in would have been perfect for your needs. Sorry like i said i would have mailed the thing to you for nothing. Bellow is MARK my best tuner running a new tune on my CAMARO after a cam change.

E36 and early model E39s were the last to use round connector. On E46 M3, everything is done thru OBD2 port if my memory is correct??
