I just bought this 86 ttop and the speedo doesnt work. The reason why it doesnt work is because its not connected but my problem is that the transmission is out of an 83 mustang and i have a 140 speedo on it. I have the correct speedo cable with the purple gear that came out of my convertible when i bought it. So my question is will the cable and gear work with the 83 trans or is it gunna mess up the teeth inside the tranny or vise versa

i called late model restoration i just told them the gear ratio i had and what year the trans was and got me the correct one.

The thing is that i dont know the gear ratio. Only thing i know about the trans is that its out of an 83 from looking at the stamp on top. I remember somebody here saying that using the wrong plastic gear in the trans will grind away the teeth. And another thing is that i dont know if 83s had a 140 speedo for the purple one i have to work. If all goes bad ill just leave it and get another trans

I finally got a change to put her up in the air. The gear in the trans is yellow. So what color gear do i need? I have the purple one somewhere

Is it auto? Or stick? I would think it wouldn't work properly cause if its stick its a 4 spd rite?

hmm i see well 83s are 4 sp so im assuming the 83 was swapped.....anyways i say just crack the pumpkin open and get it over with cause you can never be too sure and you may just be chasing your tail

The reason why i say its an 83 trans is the stamp thats on the top. My boys 92 trans had a 92 stamp and my old 86 had a 86 on it. Anyways, i just need to know if i can use the purple gear on it for my 140 speedo.

You can use it but it won't read the speed rite if its not the right gear.....which is why I say crack the pumkin open to check the gear...... I have 373s on a 5 sp my color is red........you also don't know if that's the factory rearend....

This is incorrect. 83 had both 4 speed srod & t5. In mid year they started adding the t-5's.

My rear end is stock i believe. I dont really want to open it up just to change the stupid gear because thats just too much work for something so small. Id rather have the speedo be incorrect but atleast work lol

Does the rearend still have the tag on it? If it does it should have the gear ratio stamped on it.
@ moeofit32 Did mean anything by what I typed. Just pointing out a error. Wasn't trying to make you feel stupid. Just a lot of people make that error. Just like mid year 84 cars got the quad shocks, while the earlier cars got the slapper bar set up.

Whats the ratio supposed to be? 3.27? Does different years have different ratios?
