Had a really loud engine knocking sound today got worse over 5 mile until I pulled over. Lied the hood and I could not Dx the problem. I drove the car home no loss in power or oil pressure, no over heating just a loud knocking sound from the front of the block...I checked the weep hole on the water pump. No water seeping, smelled to PS fluid no burnt smell. Took off the belt and all accessories pulleys spin freely. I went ahead and put my short belt on its running fine the sound is different now its WAY quieter and different pitch. I took the belt off and the sound went completely away...Im scratching my head on this one guys
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVGRf6geuns&feature=youtu.be
Its only about 1/10 as loud now as in this video and went away as fast as it showed up

Is your ac not hooked up? Sounds like the ac clutch is engaged and the pump is puming air out of the unhooked ports.

I had a similar sound and it was my smog pump. Replaced it and no more sound.

Someone mentioned the crank dampner already (harmonic balancer). Have you checked that? If that is ok, can you move your crankshaft horizontally? I ask because on my F150 5.0L, I couldn't stop a belt squealing noise. I changed every pulley except the AC with no luck. Turned out the thrust bearing on the crank went bad. We were checking the harmonic balancer and by grabbing it to remove it, the crank moved horizontally about 1/4" or so. This caused the belt to not ride correctly on the crank pulley thus causing noises. Depending on which belt I used, I got different results. It mostly made belt squeal, but another belt made a clacking noise like I threw a rod, almost like yours sounds like. With the belt off, grab the harmonic balancer and push and pull. See if you have movement.

I ended up swapping out the motor because of that, oh and it had over 200,000 on it!!

I'm thinking ac pump it's the only thing that moves air and has pistons in it. It's basically a small engine so engine knock is right but it probably not your v8 lol

Just took off the belt for the 5th time wiggled all the pulleys they are all free wheeling but the crank "pulley" was wiggling 3/16 of a inch. The balancer is good just the pulley is loose. im going to tight'n those bolts down and see if that fixes it

Did that fix it? Sounds like that could be the issue.

Hope it's just that!

Title edit for better searching..It turn out to be two broken bolts on the pulley. I had to shave down a 9/16 socket to fit into the pulley to get the remaining two bolts off to remove the pulley. Next challenge was to get the balancer off with only one bolt. I ended up using a c-clamp on one end of the puller and bolted the other end then cranked it off. I tried to save the old balancer but my drill press took out some threads so I end up just buying a new balancer and she back running again. those bolts are allen head 3/8-16x1" if anyone is intrested
