the deal with 86 motors is that there is no valve reliefs like the 87-95 motors. when putting on a set of GT40's you are putting on a head with a bigger valve thus reducing your valve to piston clearance. hopefully some one will chime in who has done or "tried" the swap. not sure if this is your DD. but you could always take the old heads off but the GT-40's on and clay it if you find no answer. if it doesnt work be ready to fly cut the pistons.

they sink the vavle higher in the head on those motors. its a pile in it self. get a newer lower end, then do what u want.

yea that's what I've been reading and hearing.it really sucks the motor is so healthy, low miles and have had no major issues.guess i'll have to pull it and sell it.what year short block should i look for?90-93 also would need to be mass air converted?thanks for all the help.

87 to 93 is the best but 86 to 95 will work. a new wire harness and computer, and the pieces off the throttle body.

as long as your not making any big changes you can put another motor in there. just because your using the later motor doesnt mean you will need to go mass air. aim for an 87-92 motor they were forged piston motors with valve reliefs.

would it be smarter to convert it to mass air or leave speed density?i figured we would be in there with the motor out.all it is 96 gt40 setup with the normal boltons.thanks again for the information.

yeah mass air is going to be better for sure! just wasnt sure what kind of budget your on. if you have the means to to buy and install everything to convert you to mass air do it!

Even with another stock motor in there u need to check the piston to valve Clearence these motors are not big valve ready and u will be limited on cam selection
