I would use 87 because it's cheaper and see how your motor runs. I'm running 10:1 + supercharged, so in my case I need to use 91 or better.

What's your compression?

Is the few extra cents really going to hurt you. even if you fill up, the price difference is very little...

with that combo, if it doesn't ping at WOT with 87, run 87.

with the bumped timing you may need 89, but there's no reason to run 91 on a bolt-on 5.0

this is the correct answer but who wants to listen for pinging and go through that whole "did you hear pinging? i coulda swore i heard pinging....it was pinging right?" debacle. but youre right in that if it doesnt need it, it wont help it. DCR plays a role in all this as well.

From what I've read, not all knock is easily perceptible or audible. And damage can happen even then

Yeah but the guy is worried about spending a 1 or 2 dollars more to fill up if your that worried about "unperceptible" knock go have it tuned but then there is cost involved...just run 91 if the engine is stock its not going to blow and who cares not like there is $ in that engine.. but to go back to "max performance" in the original post you need to have it tuned per dyno and adjust the timing and fuel pressure, if you don't have a adjustable fuel pressure regulator your not going to get max performance out of your combo....you can also take it to the track run 91 and slowly adjust the fuel pressure and timing till you get your best 1/4 time...BAM you got max performance "test and tune" day every sat @ sac raceway

ive been saying it probably doesnt REALLY need 91 but might be wise to just run it. Its only a couple bucks more per fillup, no sense in being THAT stingy with money.
