on a SD car it received a vacuum signal from the manifold for the ECU to determine fuel trims.
on a MAF car it's open to air rather than vacuum and called a BAP, barometric pressure sensor, to account for changes in altitude.
as far as trouble shooting, if there's a vacuum leak or a problem with the connector on it, it should throw a related code when doing a KOER self test.
