I HAVE A 1990 lx hatch 5 speed 5.0.. i bought the car a lil while ago and been working on it ever since.. im tired of it!!

i am trying to trouble shoot a issue with the car getting hot.. long story short when i bought the car drove it around for a lil while then shit started failing so i did the following... put a new 3 row alluminum radiator in it with 2 12" electric fans, new high volume water pump,160 t stat, new coolant temp censor, also im running 15% antifreeze 1 bottle of purple ice and rest distilled water!! now...... the car is getting hot way hotter than it ever has..car jumps to 180 real fast and kinda stays there. then i got on it a lil bit and the cars temp went threw the roof so i shut it off.. [Frown]
when i let it idle in the garage it gets to like 200 and kinda stays there.. makes me nervous and not even want to drive the car!! now i have pretty much changed everything that has to do with the coolant system.. my buddy came over and said check the oil.. we did that and to me the oil seems to run down the dip stick more than normal being that im runninmg 20/50 with lucus oil stabelizer!! also looks thin to me but im not 110% when it comes to motors!!.... i have not drained the oil out yet but wanted to get others opinions before i start crying cause i have a blown head gasket!! i want this car running cool as fuck.. realiable and be able to drive it any were!! mind you the car is ALL STOCK!!

plz give me info and help me try and get this car dialed in.. it would be greatly appreciated [patriot] [patriot] [patriot]

Might be a dumb question but is the thermostat in backwards?I had a real bad experience with this one time.Also.....is it the right water pump,as in could it possibly be a forward rotation pump instead of the correct reverse rotation?

160 t stat is way too cold. Stock engine will stay in open loop. Plus a stock t stat will slow the coolant flow to allow enough time in the radiator to cool.

+1 on the 160* thermostat, fuel injected cars should not run a thermostat lower than 180* as it will stay in open loop. Not good, will cause it to run rich and not read several sensors (stays in a fixed program)

If it ends up not being the t-stat,id take a look at the water pump.Seems kinda odd that the part is listed as working for a 255-302.The inlet/outlet ports on a 255 or earlier 302 water pump are at different angles and would not line up correctly with a 5.0 timing cover. But check the t-stat first. And +1 on dumping the 160 t-stat,its gonna be open constantly,go with the 180.

Running a 160 t-stat will make it run warmer believe it or not.A 160 will be open all the time and will not give the radiator a chance to cool the water down.So initially it will run cooler but as it runs for a while it will not be able to sit in the radiator long enough to cool down and will get warmer and warmer.Plus your car will run rich.So change the thermostat first and make sure its in the right way.The t-stat should have an arrow on it indicating which way coolant should flow,on a 5.0 coolant flows out the t-stat housing to the radiator.Run/drive the car for a while and see if this fixes your issue. If not then investigate the water pump. What youll have to do is look at the shape of the inlet/outlet holes on the pump and make sure they match up to the corresponding holes on the timing cover.
You can see on this picture how the inlet/outlets are opposite on these two covers.Thats what youll be looking for.
Just make sure to eliminate all other possibilities(t-stat,leaks)before tearing your pump off for nothing.
