Please respond only if you or a friend has first hand experience with a local shop or mailorder.

Is there a reputable shop that will burn custom chips?

Automatic 1999 GT computer, car now has 2003 mach1 engine and 5 speed transmission. No major mods to h DOHC, but I do need to factor in the 3:73 gears. I also want future tunes for upcoming updates. Initial tune will just be to make it drivable.

Last factor: I'm unemployed and this has to be CHEAP as possible. I am trying to find work so I don't have to sell my beloved Motorhome [Wink]

I already see future posts about wishing you'd have worried more about quality than price..... [Frown]

I would avoid chips unless your tuner only uses them? And if so I'd ask why?

the cheapest way to get a tune done, is mail order through these guys -
http://www.americanmuscle.com/x3-custom-tuner-9904gt.html

I don't know how well they work, but with the handheld you can datalog and send them exactly what your car is doing and they can adjust the tune and send you back another file to try.

the biggest thing your car needs to be tuned for is the 24lb injectors.

did you delete the IMRC plates with the motor swap? As the GT computer/harness has no provisions to control them, I deleted mine as it was just a lot easier to deal with. Alternatively to keep them, you could use an rpm activated switch like for nitrous with a 3300rpm pill to activate a relay to open the plates.

Mach1's don't have IMRC's.

As stated, a Xcal2 or 3 is the way to go. Get a handheld tuner and do mail order tunes, and load them via a USB cable. And make sure it's mail order; any local tuner is going to get tired of you...especially if you're concerned about price right outta the gate. lol

yeah, I can't afford a $600 tune for a basically stock dohc. I was hoping for something in the $200-$400 range. Any info or experience? Are you affiliated with the shop in you signature?

yeah, I guess you're right. I just need this car back on the road, and I don't have extra $$ to throw at it right now. After I put in the fuel pump I'll see how it runs. It has 19lb injectors on the motor right now. I'm just staring at the window waiting for the UPS truck to bring the fuel pump.

I paid about $400 for my SCT xcal2 + a dyno tuning session to get my car running right.

BTW - My car ran fine for ~3 months before I had it dyno tuned, just ran richer than it should due to the 24lb injectors, if you are running the 19lb injectors then don't even worry about it until you can afford to tune the car. It will start and run perfectly fine with the stock GT tune, at least mine did.

Just don't flog the hell out of it over 5000rpm as it will probably run leaner than you want it to with the 19lb's on there.
