Just to clarify your question:

1. It starts and once the engine is running the starter continues to spin?

Or

2. When you try and start it later it does not start but just cranks repeatedly?

Have you tried anything yet to try and remedy this? Maybe a new starter solenoid?

It cranks over, so I would skip the solenoid and look into a spark or fuel issue.

When it is cranking and not starting have you checked to see if you have spark? Fuel?

The noise it makes is a grinding noise. Like if the flywheel and the starter were not making contact

At least pull it and look at the teeth and the teeth on the flywheel

Lol gotta love the blinker fluid , sounds like a bad stater once you get it out check the fly wheel or flex plate If automatic trans, for missing teeth if the teeth are gone or badly damaged then you might not have contact from starter to fly wheel , if they are damaged ull hear that grinding ur talkin about and if not engageing no start.

its just sounds like it is grinding but not turing the flywheel? I had a starter on my 4x4 with 10:1 compression go out, it would start it cold, but once it warmed up the itnernals of the starter would just spin without actually turning the flywheel.

now if it were sounding like the starter was still going once it starter the engine, i could solve your problem as i chased that issue for a month on my damn fox....

its the starter solenoid of your driver side fender. it's sticking. i've replaced them before with ford pieces only to happen again. i had to exchange and all was well. next time it just keeps cranking by itself, take something solid and give the solenoid a good 1-2 smack, see if this does anything.
