the other day i was driving a car because i was gonna buy it from this kid a work.when he left the car died on him and he couldnt start it.so he tows it home and i went there today to check it out and it wont crank over it just makse a fast ticking noise like the starter is stuck.keep in mind after he started it befor all that other bull if he turned it off and try to start it again it would take a while.it would crank and start to slow down to the point it stops cranking.but anyways was wondering would a bad starter make your car shut off outta no where??never heard of it but idk everything.lol.tryed tapping the stater but it just keeps ticking...its a 87 regal with a 305 in it fyi...any info will help lmk ASAP thanks what else could have caused the car to die when he was driving it ...thanks again [Confused]

check the battery see if its any good sounds like the battery doesnt have enough juice to crank over

when the doors are open on the car the light still light up fine untill you start to crank it over.

That doesn't mean anything. Lights can work on as little as 8-9 volts. Plus, it's amperage that makes a starter work, not voltage. You can have 12v at the battery, but a dead cell won't provide enough amps to turn the motor over. My guess is, the alternator is done and the battery went flat.
