if your talking about a valve spring...then yes.

breaking a spring and droping a valve can mess up alot of things besides the valve itself.

Valve spring, how would I beable to tell if its damage without pulling the head?

Assuming it's a pushrod motor, remove the valve covers and carefully inspect each spring. A good light and one of those handheld inspection mirrors helps. You might be able to notice something wrong but it depends on the type of springs. Single springs are easier. On dual springs, it's not so easy to get a good look at the inner spring. You can try turning the motor by hand using the crankshaft bolt and watch each rocker go through its travel.

Beyond that it takes some special tools (like a valve spring tester).

Usually a broken valve spring is catastrophic and takes out a lot of other parts with it.
