Might as well ask about my dd too.....
It's an early 99' super duty.
Truck needs to be warmed up to almost full running temp before it can be driven. If not it idles very rough and looses power under any load and dies. Then hard to restart, but as soon as it does clanks really bad and smooths out once its close to running temp.
Once its been running for awhile it runs ok, but there is decreased power running up hills at 40mph and can't drive past 75 in the flats. Will let out a little white smoke when pushing it uphill. When cruising at lower rpms and luging it feels like there is a miss. Finally, when driving up steep hills especially on my way home it consistently dies when I reach the top of the hill every time then be hard to start and run like shit for a few seconds.
Its all stock except for a custom intake and tony wildman tuned chip motor wise.

I think I have a pickup issue in the tank and shot injectors, but that is a very pricey assumption, any opinions or a possible sidejob for a diesel tech to diagnose.

Can be diagnosed by a diesel tech where I work for around $150 if you want a "for sure" answer before you go into this expense!

Sounds like the injectors have a stiction problem, when it worms up the don't stick as much. The 6.0 are really bad with this. If ya need any work done, check our website out in my signiture. I do all the desiel work.

could be what blown 95 said or a late bloomer glow plug, but which one is the question , and terrible expensive. i think on that model your still able to pull the leads on your injecters to cut one at a time to narrow it down. and change the one that does nothing . not terrible hard to do. but well worth there diagnosis time to pinpoint the problem if your not to techy lol!

so your telling me the 7.3 didn't have any stiction issues? And the injectors are also oil assisted right? So sludge could cause the spool valves to stick when they are cold! And it doesn't sound like your description is the same is the op. If it were electrical it would miss all the time. He was complaining of lack of power when cold.

Also I think the 99 had the problems with the tank lining plugging up things.

About 75% of injector failure is do to low fuel pressure.

Go to powerstrokenation.com and research ebpv delete. Sounds to me like yours is sticking really bad. It's valve in the exhaust outlet of the turbo that closes for cold startups. It puts a load on the motor and seriously reduces power when closed.

Your other problem sounds like it's not firing on all cylinders on startup. I'm confused as to whether you changed the glow plugs or not? The glow plug relays are also a known failure causing the same issues. If I could hear it run I could say for sure.

No I haven't changed the glowplugs.
I just realized earlier this week that I haven't changed the oil in probably over 10k miles. This could be part of the problem, like sludge in the injectors and hpop.

It does feel and sound like it isn't starting up and running on all cylinders.
Another thing is the truck jumps to a high idle like you would choke it in cold temps, but it will keep doing this after minutes after hitting the gas or brake to turn the high idle off.
Luckly, I have some time to fix this since I got another truck to use for my trip to the rubicon.

Check the glow plug relays to confirm they even work.

Another thing you can do is un-plug the solenoid that opperates the exhaust back pressure vavle. The turbo sits on a pedestal, in the pedestal is a solenoid, un-plug it and see what happens. This thing is effectively the choke, it loads the motor by creating tons of back pressure and the idle is cranked up.

On a nice warm day, it should fire on all cylinders without the glowplugs even working.

These engines are sensitive to dirty oil, but it sounds to me like your problems are mechanical. When was the last fuel filter? If it's been a long time too, do oil/filters and see what gives. Then check out the things I mentioned before you spend any real money on it. Do yourself a favor and only mess with one thing at a time, so you know which was the problem [Wink]

pm sent

fuel filter was recently changed. I checked it when this first started happening and then had a bad leak from it, not knowing it was from the fuel bowl. Changed it and the leak stopped.
I'll change the oil and filter and go from there. I will also get a scanner on it and the codes checked hopefully on weds.
