I'm porting my aluminum heads and intake to perfectly match my 1262 gasket. but I have a question... I was told not to polish the intake port too much. It was said that I need a rough surface for the gas to pool up instead of just sliding into the cylinder. I guess it helps to create more consistent combustion? I don't remember what exactly was said, but now I'm thinking.. do I leave the bottom of the port at a 80 grit, then polish the sides, and top at 800. I would do this so air will flow smooth, and the gas will pool and do its thing.
I need some facts so I don't ruin my heads on my first porting attempt. Let me know if i'm going in the right direction.
Thanks, Mike

yes i would just port both and only polish the where the exhaust comes out so you dont get pooling and the gas is more airborne on the intake side

So what you are saying is do not polish the intake side at all, and just polish the exhaust?

The rough casting on the intake is supposed to mix the air and fuel better..... something like that. Really, the injectors shoot a fine mist at the valve so you can polish the intakes and it won't hurt the power. The method of not polishing the intake ports applied to carb setup's where the fuel traveled the whole length of the intake tract. I've done several sets of heads with very good results, if you want some pointers hit me up and I'll help you out.

Right on man, I get shit reception where I live. but maybe I can try and get some pic's up to give some visuals, then you can determine weather i'm doin the right thing. I think now i need a flow bench and then I would be achieving some professional results

I've never put my heads on a bench but the real world results are great. I've done my own heads for years and after I sold a set of Edelbrock heads I ported a few people have had me do heads for them. I've done 4 sets of aftermarket Windsor heads, a set of 4 valve Cobra heads and a couple sets of 2 valve PI heads. There are some tricks I learned to make sure they are close to the same port size.

yeah, maybe I'll take some pointers. I think I'm doing an excellent job, but I'm always down for some info, maybe there's an easier way. although it's been a cake walk so far. I'll try to get some pics up. [ August 02, 2009, 04:23 AM: Message edited by: blkfoxbody89 ]
