Ok buying a carb for my 69 Lemans. But I keep seeing sbc carbs with no mention of pontiacs. I am leaning towards believing this will work in my car and that the engines are the same. Is this a true assumption? Also what is better Holley or Edelbrock? Any advice on a brand/size? I know this is a Ford site, but hopefull someone can chime in. I trust ya'lls opinions even if it is for a Chevy.

Do you have a spread bore manifold or square bore one?
Is it aftermarket or are you doin stock replacement?
Is the enine modified or stock?
If its stock to mild i would personally would go w/ a edelbrock not to drop big coin on a carb for reliabilty and turn key perf. If its modified go w a holley hp all mechanical dp best perf. carb out there.

Do you have a spread bore manifold or square bore one? I am not quite sure what this means. How do I identify this? And what would be the diff in the carb?
Aftermarket replacement. I believe it had a Edelbrock on there before.
I am pretty sure the engine is stock. But I havent went through it yet.
Would a Edel 750 work out well?
Thanks for chiming in
Just FWIW I am not planning on doing to much hi-po stuff to the engine. Just want it running well and all pretty.
looking at picking up this carb if it will work with my setup http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/pts/910899992.html [ November 10, 2008, 01:24 PM: Message edited by: N8 ]

At the top of the manifold where the carb is sitting on... Is it squared at all four corners or does it have two some what half circles at the rear of it?
It is a four barrel manifold correct...
If your engine is mostly stock it will proably be more than happy w a 600 eddy on it just ditermine what kind of carb base you have

Ok cool, I will report back with the square vs round deal. But could you tell me what would be the ramification if lets say it is the square one?
So that 750 would be too much? Would there be a gas flow issue with a bigger carb?
Sorry for all the questions just wanna make sure I go in eyes wide.
Oh yea, it is a 4bbl manifold [ November 10, 2008, 01:30 PM: Message edited by: N8 ]

The differences are the mounting flanges and they are not compatible w one another unless you go out your way and buy a adapter(too much of a hassle if your going to be buying a new carb either way)
The 750 would be happier on a higher reving small block motor that has been modified quit a bit or a mild big block.
It can/would be possible for it too run too rich with that big of a carb on a stock engine and you would lose perf and waste more fuel.

If your intake has 4 equally spaced out throttle bores then you have a square bore.
Also, I never had good luck with metering rod carbies, especially the edelbrock and carters.
A nice 600 vac secondary holley will work great for you N8!

aahh....so you can mix the 2? The intake does not have the 4 holes spoke about. But almost like 2 rectangles.

You are good to go.
Slap a holley on there.
Square bore, not spread bore.

Back in the day I used to go to the junk yards and find a clean quadrajet. Good to go. But that was probably more than 10 years ago. I think the quadrajets were 600-625 cfm. I had nothing but trouble with holleys.

I use to buy 2 or 3 quadrajets try all of them and then I used the best one. I guess it depends on your situation. [ November 13, 2008, 01:41 PM: Message edited by: svt97 ]
