I have a set of Crane Energizer 1.7 rockers. It came with all the hardware. Shims were also included. (of course) But do I need the shims? The shims increase the rocker height, right? Or can I bolt it on without the shims?

DID IT COME WITH SPRINGS? THATS WHAT THE SHIMS ARE FOR. YOU SHOULD HAVE THE SPRINS CHECKED TO FIND OUT WHAT AMOUNT OF SHIM YOU NEED. THE WHOLE ASSEMBLY HAS TO BE CHECKED TO GET PROPPER LIFT. NOT ENOUGH SPRING PRESSURE AND THEY WONT STAY SEATED DURING INTAKE. A PROBLEM I RAN INTO.

No, I'm using the stock springs. What if I not use the shims?

The shims are used to adjust valve lash. On stock heads and rockers you torque the rocker nut to 25ft pounds and your done. Now you are adding an aftermarket rocker that may require shims to achieve the same valve lash.
The best way for checking valve lash is: Intake- When the exhaust valve just starts to open you set the intake valve lash for the same cylinder.
Exhaust- The intake valve opens all the way and just starts to close you adjust the exhaust valve lash for the same cylinder.
Most hydraulic cams are 0 lash and 1/2 turn. As you tighten the rocker nut, spin the push rod, as soon as you feel a slight resistance you are at 0 lash. Now you go a half turn more and your done. Now that is if you had poly locks.
Here are the crane instructions. Too much to type.
